The Appeal
Easily one of the most iconic classic vehicles on the planet, the Jaguar E-Type presents an excellent balance of classy styling and impressive performance. Even today, the E-Type is still regarded as a truly fine showcase of Jaguar’s craftsmanship, and brilliant engineering.
Offered today is a fantastic opportunity to obtain one of these legendary classics, in project form. With the exception of the windscreens, rear axle, and rubber seals, everything required to re-assemble this mighty jag is present.
Buying the vehicle in project form offers plenty of potential for both cost savings and full creative freedom with the rebuild. Upon completion, you will of course have a stunning, freshly built Jaguar E-Type within your collection. As enthusiasts will likely be familiar with, the values of these Jags have skyrocketed in recent years, which suggests room for an excellent investment opportunity here today.
The History and Paperwork
- 4 former keepers
- V5C document present
- Low mileage example
- Prepped shell
In its early days, this Jaguar was no doubt savoured for special occasions, as suggested by the impressively low mileage covered. The Jaguar was then acquired by the current keeper, who, being an avid enthusiast of the model, rose to the initial challenge of restoring the legendary coupe.
After disassembling the vehicle, the original blue shell was then sent away to be restored by a specialist in Stockport and is now near ready for the new red paint (which didn't go ahead). The shell now sits alongside the majority of the original components and yearns to be put back together.
Although now disassembled, this E-Type project does indeed have a matching V5C document, which removes a great deal of hassle when it comes to getting the vehicle back on the road. The V5C document shows just 4 former keepers and is accompanied by a previous MOT certificate from 1985, which has a recorded mileage of just 13,276.
The Interior
- Brand new complete biscuit leather interior
- Original steering wheel present
- Full red interior
- Gauges, instruments & wiring present
- All interior components are present
As the images reflect, the interior parts of this E-Type currently show their original red vinyl finish, albeit with minor signs of age. Also included, however, is an unopened complete biscuit-coloured interior, complete with carpeting. The biscuit interior has been sourced at considerable expense, and will no doubt yield a gorgeous, brand-new finish within the completed cabin.
Also present are the original dash components, instruments, and the steering wheel among other parts. Now rather difficult to obtain, these original pieces show only minor signs of age, although the wooden steering wheel will likely require attention, having split as a result of age.
Although in loose form, the current keeper ensures all major interior components are present, which will no doubt save a great deal of time and cost when it comes to the rebuild. As mentioned, a few of these original items may require a dash of TLC but are quickly becoming priceless in today’s market.
The Exterior
- Previously prepped shell & front-end
- Extensive previous repairs & new panels
- The vast majority of exterior components are present
- Both front & rear screens and rubber seals are the only known missing items
As mentioned above, the shell was sent away to a specialist in Stockport to receive minor repairs and was prepared for paint. The repairs consisted of a new boot floor, new rear lower quarter panels, new inner & outer quarter panels, new inner wheel arches all around, new sills, new floor panels, new bulkhead panels & supports, new door skins, new front wings, new front bonnet valence, a new picture frame, and new headlight support panels. The original colour was blue but since the shell was sent away to be prepped, the vendor decided it was going to go red which never went ahead and changed this on the V5 to reflect the new colour.
As the images reflect, a light layer of surface rust has begun to show in areas, and the shell will likely need a dash of TCL before it can be ready for paint once again. That said, the sheer amount of new panels and previous repairs certainly shouldn’t be overlooked, and should save the new owner a great deal of time, cost, and effort. The body shell was fitted with brand new Martin Robey panels and has been rejigged as part of the major restoration along with a new bonnet support frame as well.
Although not all parts are pictured, the current owner ensures that all other exterior components are present, with the exception of rubber seals and front & rear screens. Key exterior items to note include the original headlights, original tail lights, quarter glass, 6 wire-spoke wheels, and more. The wheels will of course require attention to return to their former glory, but are certainly a welcome addition.
The Mechanics
- 4.2L straight-six
- Front frame included
- All front steering & suspension components included
- Engine, gearbox, and prop shaft included
- Heater and all ancillaries are included
- Exhaust system included
- Brand new full wiring harness
- Brand new clutch included
- Rear axle not included
The E-Type truly is an impressive performance car, even by today’s standards. Once rebuilt, this 4.2L Series 1 will no doubt live up to its legendary reputation, and continue to impress for many more years to come.
Fortunately, a great deal of the required components is present, including a few tasty goodies such as a full brand new wiring harness, and a new clutch, both of which are yet to be opened. In fact, the only known mechanical component that is missing is the rear axle, which can still be obtained in today’s market without too much difficulty.
Obviously, various items will benefit from restoration or replacements, such as hardware, bushings, and the fuel tank, which will likely need replacing due to age. It would also, of course, be wise to rebuild the engine, to ensure hassle-free motoring for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, the current keeper already has a new clutch ready to be installed, which presents yet more cost savings and ease later down the line.
Summary
With Jaguar E-Types being as desirable and valuable as they are today, this Series 1 in project form presents an excellent opportunity for cost savings and creative freedom. There’s also the tempting potential for the priceless experience of rebuilding one of these legendary coupes, an opportunity which is otherwise rather scarce.
As previously mentioned, the vast majority of required components and original parts are included in the sale. Other than the front & rear windscreens, rear axle, and rubber seals, not a great deal is needed to dive right into this incredibly rewarding project, and the vehicle yearns to be enjoyed once more.
This is certainly a rare opportunity and should be considered by all collectors, restorers, and enthusiasts alike.
