Highlights
- Rare first generation Mustang
- ‘Thriftpower’ I6 powerplant with automatic transmission
- White paintwork with blue vinyl interior
- Highly original
The Appeal
The legendary Mustang is simply an essential classic. This American car summates much of mid-century automobile design, with powerful engines, sporty interiors and an aggressive stance that’s still utterly iconic more than 50 years later.
This early example - with the lesser-spotted ‘Thriftpower’ I6 powerplant - arrived in the UK in April 2016. With only two British owners since, it’s clear that this pony car has been very nicely cared for.
The History and Paperwork
- Built in 1966 at Ford’s San Jose factory
- First arrived in the UK in April 2016
- In current ownership since May 2019
- MOT exempt and last tested in 2019
- The car has covered less than 1,500 miles since
- Currently indicates 88,007 miles on a five-figure odometer
- The vendor is unaware of any clock changes over the car’s life
- The paperwork file includes:
- V5c document
- Extensive service invoice from 2016
- Invoice for a comprehensive engine rebuild in 2021
- A stock of other invoices and certificates
- Original 1966 Mustang handbook
- The car also carries a 50th anniversary Mustang cover
The Condition
- Finished in Wimbledon White
- According to the car’s info plate, it was originally finished in Arcadian blue
- The relevant repaint is likely to have been carried out decades ago
- Some light signs of wear to the paintwork’s lowest extremities
- No dents or dings across the board
- Original branded wire-spoke wheels
- Shod in a full set of Goodyear tyres in excellent order
- The rear tyres are reportedly brand new
- The car’s cabin is laid out beautifully in blue vinyl
- Here, everything is in excellent order
- The steering wheel has been replaced
- However the original blue one is included in the sale
- The vendor notes that the GT Pack on the wheel is non-functional
- Seats and dashboard are in excellent order with no rips or tears
- Carpets show light wear in line with the car’s age
- The vendor notes that the 8-track player could use a new motor
- Underneath the car, things are in excellent fettle
- Some very scarce surface corrosion but nothing of concern
The Mechanics
- Original 3.3L Thriftpower I6 powerplant - providing around 120hp
- 3-speed automatic transmission
- The engine was extensively rebuilt in 2021
- Oil changed in Autumn 2022
- The car reportedly produces ‘about a cup’ of water when cooling
- Accordingly, the vendor believes it could do with an expansion chamber
- The vendor notes that the car starts first time with no issues
- We’ve no reports of leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke from the car
- Ultimately, this appears to be a superb example of a rare I6 Mustang
