The Appeal
Developed by Ford as part of its efforts to explore potential future versions of the popular Mustang lineup, this Mustang was designed with a focus on advanced aerodynamics and a futuristic appearance, reflecting Ford's ambition to create a vehicle that combined sportiness with cutting-edge design.
This stunning 1966 example was imported to the UK shortly before being registered in 2017. Upon arrival, the Mustang underwent a mechanical overhaul by the first keeper, followed by an exterior and interior restoration a few months later when the vendor finally persuaded his friend to sell the Mustang.
The result is a beautiful 1966 Ford Mustang, with over £10,000 spent on the restoration, bringing it to the superb condition you see here.
History and Paperwork
- UK registered on 1st December 2017
- Mechanical restoration carried out by the previous owner
- The current owner restored the bodywork and interior in 2018
- Several invoices show some of the parts purchased
- This was a no-expense-spared restoration for the vendor
- Over £10,000 has been spent
- It is thought to have been a one-owner car in the United States, purchased for a gentleman's daughter when she graduated from Pennsylvania State University (the Penn State decal is still in the rear window), but there is no paperwork to substantiate this.
The Condition
- Finished in the original colour
- Full bare-metal respray
- Fully undersealed
- Fully retrimmed leather interior
The Mustang's bodywork has undergone an extensive restoration, including new wings and quarters. Importantly, the floor and both sills were in very good condition, making this an excellent base car to restore to its former glory.
The car is finished in the stunning original colour of Sauterne Gold, sometimes known as Med Sage Metallic, depending on the production year. The paintwork is excellent and really shines in sunlight, as shown in the photographs.
At the front, the chrome bumper has been replaced and is, therefore, in excellent condition; the grille sits nicely, and the UK-spec headlights are undamaged, as these were also replaced with new units. There is a minor crack in the bonnet paintwork, but the vendor includes some paint should you wish to address this.
Looking along the sharp lines of this American classic, there are no dings or dents to note. Most of the chrome work, including the badges, has been replaced, although there is a very minor amount of tarnishing on the quarter window frames. The windows appear to be in good condition with no noticeable scratches.
At the rear, the iconic Mustang rear lights and the new chrome bumper are in excellent condition. As mentioned earlier, the Penn State University decal has been left in the rear window for a touch of period effect.
The five-spoke wheels, with Anthracite spokes and a polished rim, are all in excellent condition, and the tyres have only covered a handful of miles.
Inside, the Mustang has been given a full makeover, with newly trimmed green leather seats that complement the exterior perfectly. These, along with the matching door cards, are in excellent condition.
The dashboard is free from splits or cracks, and the instruments are all original, in excellent condition, and working correctly. The odometer shows a reading of 68,858 miles. The original steering wheel, radio, and switchgear are in place, all of which are in good order. New carpets and a new headlining have been fitted to finish off the excellent interior.
The Mechanics
- 302 cu in V8
- Alloy pulley set installed
- Chrome rocker covers
- Edelbrock air filter
- Three-speed automatic
Fitted with what is believed to be a 302 small block V8, as opposed to the 289 originally fitted, which is what it was sold to the vendor as, although there is no paperwork to confirm this.
The engine fires up without hesitation and sounds fantastic through the custom sports exhaust. The car still runs on the original headers; the only modifications are the rocker covers, Edelbrock air filter, and the professional installation of the Sniper Electronic Fuel Injection system, which improves performance and reliability. A new water pump and power steering pump have been fitted, and these now use alloy pulleys rather than steel.
The car retains the original drum brakes, which are in good order and reportedly bring the car to a stop in a straight line with no issues.
