The Appeal
In April 1964 Ford unveiled their eagerly awaited new car to the American car buying public and an instant motoring style icon, the Ford Mustang, was born, and the rest, as they say, is history.
An early manual Mustang with a lovely sounding V8 in this condition and with a convertible roof has got to be high on everyone’s wish list of ‘cars they’d love to own’ and so expect a lot of bidders on this very nicely presented car.
The History and Paperwork
• First registered in 1966
• Imported from USA in 2016 and UK registered
• Current owner purchased it in 2020
• V5c present showing only 2 UK owners
• 2 keys
• MOT exempt, but will come with 12 months MOT
The current owner bought the car pretty much as is, about 2 years ago, and has driven it sparingly and very enjoyably throughout his ownership, with no issues to report.
Storage space has now become an issue and he is now reluctantly offering the car up for auction.
The Interior
• Pony motif seats
• Great condition throughout
• Period radio upgrade
• Wooden steering wheel
Finished in Red and White the interior is looking very sharp and stylish, with what looks like new carpets and excellent deluxe Pony seats with very nice dashboard, headlining and door-cards.
It’s a roomy and comfortable cabin, the seats have been renovated and there’s certainly likely to have been re-trimmed as it all presents itself very nicely and correctly.
There’s a small tear in the driver’s seat which is an easy fix and the back panels to the front seat s will be re-fitted prior to sale and the rest is really nice with the gentle patina of true age creeping in fittingly here and there. All the chrome and footplates look good, and the power hood operates nice and smoothly.
The Exterior
• Nice Red paintwork with racing stripes in white
• Original wheels with good tyres
• Good chrome all round
The bright Red paintwork has a good deep shine to it with only a few minor areas that need addressing. The rear bumper has some scuffs and scratches and the driver’s door needs a nasty dent dealt with but that’s about it, other than a bit of paint bubbling on the passenger door. Under the bonnet, inside the boot and even under the car all look in great condition and certainly don’t set any alarm bells ringing in any department.
The chrome finished wheels are in great condition, all wearing recent new tyres and the rest of the car presents extremely well, with only a small patched repair on the hood, everything else on the car is in real nice condition and it very much looks the part.
The Mechanics
• Rebuilt 4.7 Litre V8 with manual transmission
• Excellent engine bay presentation
Under the bonnet there’s obviously been a lot of recent renovation and attention and it certainly looks like an engine bay that has been put together with performance in mind and a lot of attention to detail.
The car has had a recent new battery and minor service, will come with a brand new MOT and is reported to drive and sound like a 1966 Mustang should.
The Summary
This is a beautiful and original example of a well looked after and iconic American classic. It is an early production Mustang models with the 289 V8 engine, manual 4-speed gearbox and handy power steering, power hood, and in the very attractive colour of Red with a contrasting red and white interior.
Exact numbers of the first Mustang convertibles produced seem to be somewhat of a mystery due to Ford’s early records getting destroyed, but you can be sure that there won’t be many of Mustangs out there in this condition and specification, so its rarity, future desirability and collectability is beyond question.
