The Appeal
Produced by the legendary Sleaford-based Carlight, the Continental set out to be the Rolls-Royce of caravans, offering bountiful space, luxurious touches, and industry-leading construction methods. Even today, the Carlight reflects its excellent build quality and high-end construction beautifully, continuing to offer a first-class caravanning experience.
Despite their impressive specification and desirable comforts, a great deal of the original production figure has no doubt fallen to age, making this example all the rarer. In addition to being rather rare in today’s market, this Carlight has been beautifully preserved and still sports the vast majority of its original 1966 specification.
Now shown in excellent order inside and out, this presents a fantastic opportunity for holidaymakers on the search for a comfortable 4-berth caravan to enjoy and deserves to be on the list of any vintage collector.
The History and Paperwork
Incredibly rare 1966 vintage caravan
Presented in mostly original condition
Cherished by the current keepers for the last 11 years
Ready to be enjoyed by the lucky new keeper
Dating back to 1966, this Carlight Continental has no doubt been a part of many happy adventures, with plenty of memories made along the way. The caravan has been enjoyed by the current keepers for the last 11 years, spending time both at seasonal pitches, and touring across the nation. Although no additional paperwork is included with the caravan, the current keeper assures us that no expense has been spared along the way, and this 4-berth Continental is more than ready to be enjoyed.
The Interior
Original moquette upholstery, in very good condition considering the age, with some areas of wear.
Bright and airy, with plenty of space
Features fly-screens all around, two fully functional skylights, with a lantern style roof with fully functioning openings all around
Well equipped, with 12V powered interior lighting, and a host of appliances and comforts, including;
A gas water heater (un tried and un tested), shower and onboard water tank
Morphy Richards electric fire mains powered
Montpellier fridge & freezer
A two-ring burner gas oven and grill
With a luxurious and fully functioning cocktail cabinet
Comparable to the price of a house in its heyday, the Carlight boasts a rather well-equipped cabin, with plenty of onboard comforts. It’s also rather spacious, and proudly hosts room for four, with the option for either two double beds or two singles and one double bed.
Being mostly original, the caravan also still sports its original moquette upholstery, complete with red curtains and fly screens all around. As the images reflect, the upholstery and flooring present themselves very well for the caravan’s age, only light blemishes, and slight damage to a few of the cushions, and slight damage to a few of the cushions. It's key to add the kitchen flooring is the original linoleum flooring,
Included as part of the caravan’s high specification are a Morphy Richards electric fire, electric mains heater, Montpellier fridge freezer, sink and a gas-powered 2 burner oven and grill. The current keepers can also include the original gas water heater, although it is recommended the heater, oven and gas lanterns are properly tested before use.
All in all, the interior is a truly pleasant space to spend your time. You’re treated to a bright and airy cabin thanks to skylights and plenty of well-placed windows, vintage moquette styling, and a host of comforts and gadgets. With the exception of a few minor signs of age, and missing covers for two of the gas lights (replacements can be sourced online from the Carlight club), the interior leaves very little to be further desired, and is ready to be enjoyed
The Exterior
Resprayed in crisp white
Shows plenty of original details
Presented in excellent overall condition
Now sporting a crisp coat of white in favour of the aged original cream colourway, this Carlight Continental stands in fantastic condition for its age. There are of course minor chips and blemishes to note, but these are only noticeable upon close inspection and hardly detract from an otherwise well-preserved exterior.
Keen eyes will notice plenty of original components around the caravan, including the original door handle, B&B hitch, and even an original B&B hub cap. The opposing wheel bears a Saab hub cap, which is quite a presentable alternative to the incredibly scarce original pieces.
Overall, you’d be rather hard-pressed to find fault with the finish present on this nearly 60-year-old caravan. This Carlight will look at home amongst well-cared-for caravans and offers many more years of well-preserved vintage styling. A vintage caravans use is only limited by your imagination, and this caravan has the potential to be anything you want it to be.
The Mechanics
Fitted with 12V onboard interior electric lighting from a leisure battery
Well equipped, with fully functional appliances & electrics
Includes two gas bottles, one partially full, and one empty
In excellent working order, with no known faults to note
Ready to be enjoyed
The current keepers inform us that the Carlight Continental is said to be quite an easy companion to live with, offering easy towing, even for the likes of classic cars, where the owner had previously towed this with their Humber super snipe. This example is also said to be in excellent working order, with no known faults to note and plenty of onboard comforts to enjoy. As previously mentioned, however, the current keepers do advise having the gas lights, and the optionally included original gas heater inspected prior to use.
Summary
Regarded as one of the most prestigious caravans put to production, the Carlight Continental is a superb showcase of leading retro caravan design, remaining impressive to this day. Offered in excellent condition inside and out, this 1966 Carlight Continental presents fantastic value for money in today’s market, and would no doubt make an excellent family explorer or collection piece.
