The Appeal

BMW called it ‘Neu Klasse’ with typical understatement. After years of post-war confusion, the new Type 118 was a firm reboot for BMW, fuelled by the focus and finances of the Quandt family. Just as the family remain firmly at the helm of BMW, the car’s crisp three-box styling, designed by Walter Hofmeister and first outing for his famous ‘kink’ - has influenced every BMW saloon ever since.

This 1966 1800 is rather special. It was extensively recommissioned and restored in 2020, including a full respray plus work to the brakes and cooling systems. Prior to that, it was in storage from the early 1970s, which explains the very low mileage of 104,000 kms. It is also the reason for the well preserved black interior with its array of original period details.

The restoration work was very sympathetic and has retained as many of the original features as possible, such as the pretty hub caps. So buyers should expect some light patina, but this arguably adds to the character.

The car had an advisory-free MOT to July 2024 so renewing this ought to be a formality. Once sorted this stylish classic is ready to enjoy.
