1966 Alvis TF21

Highlights

  • Just four registered keepers of which the last two have been father and son
  • Superbly presented throughout and in fantastic overall condition
  • Accompanied by a substantial collection of invoices from Red Triangle and several other marque specialists
  • One of just 106 TF21s ever made

The Appeal

The TF21 was to be the Alvis’ final car and just 106 examples were made during its short production run. While visually similar to its TE21 predecessor, sharing the same Park Ward bodywork, the TF21 incorporated several notable suspension upgrades and a redesigned interior. With a top speed of 127 mph, it was the fastest Alvis ever made too, so one wonders what the firm would have accomplished next if it hadn’t ceased trading in 1967.
We’re delighted to offer this superb example which has been in the same family for around thirteen years when the vendor acquired it from its second registered keeper. We’re informed that the Alvis drives beautifully, and we observe that it’s in beautiful condition throughout. For collectors seeking a well-sorted example, this TF21 is eminently worthy of your consideration.

The History and Paperwork

  • Current registration ‘COD 873’ not included - the car will be offered with a different registration
  • Acquired by the vendor’s father around thirteen years ago and later transferred to the vendor after their father became ill
  • Service invoice from May 2023
  • Numerous invoices for previous services, some dating back to the mid-’80s
  • Red Triangle carried out a great deal of miscellaneous jobs in 2004 amounting to almost £60,000
  • Much of the maintenance has been entrusted to Red Triangle over the years who also issue a continuation service booklet
  • Copy of the original factory record with options listed
  • 22,953 miles indicated on the five-figure odometer (unwarranted)
  • V5C present
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing

The Condition

  • Smart blue paintwork - factory records suggest the car was originally dark green
  • Straight and solid-looking bodywork with very good panel/door alignment
  • Handsome chromed wire wheels shod with period-correct Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres
  • Front bumper replaced and bonnet repainted in 2014
  • Highly presented interior evidently subject to exemplary retrimming/restoration work
  • Well-preserved veneers and wood-rimmed steering wheel
  • The leather upholstery and carpeting appear in very good order
  • The boot carpet is somewhat motheaten
  • No notable wear to the seats
  • Still fitted with a period Radiomobile stereo
  • We’re not informed of any apparent issues with the switchgear
  • The headlining is clean and well-supported with only very small imperfections
For such a large car, by the standards of its era at least, the TF21 is very elegant, especially finished in this soft pale blue. The Park Ward coachwork is clearly of the highest quality, and this example looks to have weathered the passage of time commendably well. The history file shows that it has undergone bodywork restoration and refinishing in the past and we note that the panels and doors fit very well.

The chrome is all very smart, as is the glass and various badges. On the inside, we find a well-preserved interior with little in the way of wear to report. This truly is a fabulous place to sit as you soak up the miles.

The Mechanics

  • 2,993 cc straight-six fed by three SU carburettors
  • Automatic gearbox
  • Significant mechanical overhaul in 2015 (invoices present) and numerous other services recorded dating back decades
  • All presents well under the bonnet and looks to be very original
  • We’re not informed of any apparent mechanical issues
Alvis were keen to present their cars as the sporting choice, so it was important that they remained competitive under the bonnet. A 3.0-litre straight-six ensured that the TF21 could attain a very respectable 127 mph, making this the perfect car for long-distance Continental touring. We’re informed that it drives very well indeed, benefitting from years of judicious maintenance.
