The Appeal
Practically synonymous with Rolls-Royce, the Silver Shadow is a legendary slab-sided luxury car that carried plenty of brand new technical innovations for its day - with a hydropneumatic suspension, disc brakes and a glamorous interior that quickly warmed the car to its target audience - the world elite.
This early example comes to us in excellent order, with an impressive period interior and a distinguished character that’s really warmed us at Car & Classic. We’ve no doubt this car will garner plenty of attention.
The History and Paperwork
- Built in 1965
- Originally supplied to Switzerland
- In 1970 the car was registered in the UK, where it’s remained since
- The DVLA records seven owners in the United Kingdom
- Currently indicates 89,013 miles on a five-figure odometer
- The car was recorded at 98,637 miles in 2008, so the car may have been ‘around the clock’
- The car underwent a major service last year and has been driven twice since
- MOT exempt and last tested in 2008
- The car’s paperwork file includes:
- Photocopy of the original order form
- Photocopy of the factory test card
- Photocopy of the car’s sale invoice
- Photocopy of the warranty claim in 1967

The Interior
- Impressive period interior in cream leather
- Highly original with no known modifications
- Cream leather seats are full and free of any significant wear
- We can’t spot any rips or tears across the board
- The door cards are clean and well-kept
- Dashboard features an extensive walnut trim
- This is in very good order with only light age-commensurate wear
- The instruments are all clean and well-presented
- A Radiomobile music system is stowed underneath the dash
- Air conditioning is present and correct
- The array is nicely completed by a period steering wheel
- The interior chromework carries some patina
- The carpets and mats are in very good condition throughout
- Round the back, the boot looks solid with clean lining
The Exterior
- Impressive slab-sided bodywork with the legendary Rolls-Royce grille
- The bodywork is tightly-knit and well-presented
- Regal Red paintwork that was refreshed fairly recently
- Some light marks, smudges and swirling
- The chromework carries a slight patina but presents well
- The signature grille is very impressive with the trademark branding and ornament
- Glasswork and lenses are in good order with no chips or fractures
- The cat is sat on its original colour-matched wheels
- Shod in a full set of Avon tyres which look in good order
- The underside carries some surface corrosion but looks solid throughout
The Mechanics
- 6230cc L410 V8 powerplant
- 4-speed automatic transmission
- The engine bay carries light age-commensurate wear
- However, it is in highly original condition throughout
- The vendor notes that the brake pedal has to travel quite far to engage
- This is likely to be a corroded brake line that will need repair
- However, other than this the car is working well with no major faults
- We understand the car has no leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke
Summary
Beautifully presented, and highly original, this is a very early example of a legendary model of luxury car. With its impressive colour scheme and marvellous interior, we’ve no doubt this luxury car will attract plenty of attention.
