  • Exceedingly original throughout
  • Rare factory hard top present
  • Recently passed rigorous TÜV inspection

The Appeal

Designed by the legendary Pietro Frua at Carrozeria Ghia, the Renault Caravelle was developed with the burgeoning American sports car market in mind.
This svelte little car proved surprisingly rapid as it was based upon the underpinnings of the rear-engined Dauphine and powered by the well-regarded Gordini-tuned engine. It also boasted nimble handling thanks to its low mass and the novel fitment of disc brakes on all four wheels greatly aided stopping power. The Caravelle was priced competitively too - and buyers could choose from a range of body styles.
Here we have one of the rare survivors, an exceedingly original 1965 Caravelle Convertible. The vendor points out that this is the desirable post-facelift version with the smartly appointed dashboard and they also inform us that much of the paintwork is believed to be original! The shell looks to be exceedingly straight and the vendor assures us there are no signs of corrosion throughout. The trims and folding soft top are all reportedly the original items and the rare factory hard top is present also.
The Renault has recently passed the gruelling TÜV inspection and following a recent service, is ready to drive.

The History and Paperwork

  • Swiss market example - which has remained there until recently
  • TÜV recently passed
  • Original Swiss documents and German papers present
  • Acquired in Germany last year
  • 66,753 kilometres indicated - which the vendor believes is an accurate figure

The Condition

  • The vendor advises that the car is practically in its original body/paint condition
  • It presents very well throughout, with no obvious signs of notable damage or corrosion
  • We’re informed that the floor of this car is completely original, rust-free, and has an original protective coating.
  • The soft top appears in good order and is suitably patinated
  • The car comes with the matching factory hardtop - a rare find as most were lost or damaged
  • All the chrome trims are said to be original and have not been repaired - they’re commendably wel-preserved
  • The interior is in great condition and is reportedly also original, with seats, carpets, plastics, upholstery, and trims all being the factory items
  • There’s little to report in the way of wear to the upholstery and controls, and the vendor assures us there’s no damage
  • The vendor notes that this is the post-facelift version with two round gauges on the dash - which was considered a notable improvement to the earlier version with a large plastic counter

The Mechanics

  • Gordini R8-derived 1,108 cc four-cylinder engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • We’re advised that the suspension has been checked, the brakes repaired, the engine and fuel system inspected, and all oils and fluids replaced
The vendor states that the car is “ready to go. The engine works perfectly and starts very well and everything in it functions, including all the electrics and the radio

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
