1965 MGB Roadster ex-Stirling Moss

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Built for Stirling Moss by Brown & Gammons
  • All FIA papers and logbook
  • Amazing history file
  • Ideal for historic road/rally events with celebrity provenance

THE APPEAL

If you get pulled over for speeding in this car and the traffic officer asks “Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?” then you might just get away with it. After all, it has the legendary racer’s name on both front wings, and it’s not just there for decoration.
Imported from the USA as a dry state shell and built for Sir Stirling to compete in the 1989 Pirelli Classic Marathon by renowned MG specialists Brown & Gammons, the 1965 B Roadster has a full FIA logbook and records of events it has competed in, complete with a magazine article showing Moss sitting on the roof, and a DVD of the Marathon with this very car on the cover. It’s a fine piece of provenance for a car that’s very special indeed.
It finished 3rd overall in the prestigious event and came 1st in Class with Sir Stirling at the wheel and has had five UK owners since, having been used as a fast road/rally car, competing in the 2004 Tour Auto amongst other events. It was little used for the 10 years prior to a full rebuild in 2020/21, and has been barely used since.
Originally built to FIA Appendix K regulations for Stirling Moss to use in the 1989 Pirelli Classic Marathon, it was completely rebuilt between 2021 and 2023 by Chequered Flag Classics and JS Motorsport. It has a new engine [only run on a dyno], rebuilt gearbox and overdrive. Rebuilt axle, suspension and brakes.

The bills for the work are in excess of £20,000 and include a brand new (£10,000) 2.1-litre engine with 96mm twin counter balance crank, new lightweight EN24V rods, short compression height pistons and a Kent 717 cam, balanced by Andrews Precision and built by JS Motorsport.
It's an incredible car with amazing provenance, the like of which is very rarely offered for sale.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • UK V5C
  • MOT and tax exempt
  • FIA logbook
  • Entry forms from 1989 Pirelli Classic Marathon and 2004 Tour Auto included
  • You can watch the video of Sir Stirling racing this MGB here: https://youtu.be/-th6J8YjI0s?t=97
  • Old MOTs dating back to 1990
  • Historic photographs and magazine articles
  • Selection of invoices documenting all recent work carried out, totalling more than £20,000

THE CONDITION

  • Good overall condition with a few small marks to the body and residue from where stickers have been removed
  • Minator alloys with Dunlop Racing 5.50-L14 racing tyres
  • Sebring front and rear panels
  • Perspex windows
  • PVC Le Mans headlight fairings
  • Alloy bonnet
  • Ridgard racing seats
  • Four-point harnesses
  • Carpets worn but serviceable
  • FIA-approved six-point Safety Devices roll cage
  • Competition rev counter
  • Boot and bonnet straps. Air horns.
  • Mota Lita steering wheel signed by Stirling Moss.
  • Remote bonnet pull
  • Battery cut off
This is very much a fast road competition car, its cabin snug and tight as you climb over the Safety Devices roll cage to get in.
It’s certainly not for gentle touring – the competition seats are a snug fit and a Smith’s heater is the only luxury. It’s rugged inside, but in smart overall order.
Outside, it’s in fine fettle. There are a few marks around the body and a couple of touched-in stone chips, but the panels are all in good order with a decent paint finish, other than some blemishes where stickers have been removed – in many ways, just another part of this remarkable car’s provenance.

THE MECHANICS

Subject to a £10,000 engine rebuild in 2021 and barely used since, the MGB is a bit of a beast. The 2.1-litre unit runs a twin-choke Weber carb and was built by highly respected classic racing engineers JS Motorsport.
It’s an incredible performer, with uprated rear suspension, adjustable dampers and competition brakes, ready to use on fast road events, hill climbs or more advanced events, which its FIA papers make it eligible for.
