The Interior
- Superb interior throughout
- Modern stereo fitted
- Excellent upholstery, carpets and door cards
This 230 SL’s interior has evidently been well cared for, and received plenty of attention, with the supportive seats remaining very tidy and showing little sign of wear. Mercedes interiors of this period are famously hard wearing, and this SL is testament to that legacy.
The matching door cards are similarly well kept, with no scuffs or significant damage that we could see. And the same goes for the carpets, which look clean and tidy.
In front of the driver sits a fabulous white steering wheel, with chrome horn ring and padded centre. And beyond this lies the bright red dashboard, which matches the rest of the car’s paintwork. It features a modern stereo at its centre, with large instruments in the driver’s line of sight and chrome trim pieces running the length of the dashboard.
To the rear, there is a spacious boot, with plenty of room for luggage. It features ribbed rubber matting on its floor and a full size spare wheel, with its own fitted cover.
The Exterior
- Classic Mercedes styling with tall headlights
- Desirable ‘Pagoda’ roof
- Excellent resprayed paintwork and trim
The ‘Pagoda’ roofed Mercedes have always retained a dedicated following and it’s easy to see why, with their elegant ‘60s styling.
This particular 230 SL is finished in a charming shade of bright red, which ensures it gets plenty of attention wherever it goes. The paint itself is in good condition throughout, with only a few blemishes to be found, as you would expect to see on an older restoration. But there’s nothing that appears to require immediate attention.
The lamp lenses look clear and bright, while the chrome trim is well polished. There is a little pitting to be found on some of the chrome, but it doesn’t detract from the car’s overall appeal.
The car runs on colour-matched steel wheels, with chromed hubcaps and trim pieces. And the generously proportioned tyres will ensure the ride is supremely comfortable.
A black fabric hood completes the look. It provides excellent weather protection when raised, and appears to be free from wear or significant damage.
The Mechanics
- 2,308cc straight-six engine
- Recent substantial recommissioning
- Extensive invoices for parts and servicing
Under the shapely bonnet of this Mercedes lies its capable six-cylinder engine. this, coupled with the manual transmission, makes for an appealing driving experience. Mercedes of this vintage are superbly capable motorcars, with well-engineered mechanicals, able to easily keep up with modern traffic.
The vendor informs us that the car starts and drives excellently, and was the subject of a substantial recommissioning between November 2022 and February 2023, documented in the accompanying extensive paperwork folder.
The engine bay certainly looks clean and tidy, and underneath there has evidently been considerable expenditure, including new fitted suspension bushes.
Summary
This Pagoda looks the part, with its wonderful bright red paint and chrome trim. It is in very good cosmetic condition, having been previously resprayed. And it benefits from extensive recent mechanical servicing to bring it up to a high standard. So in all, it’s a great looking car which also drives superbly. A winning combination.
