The Appeal

If you’d driven the Aurelia in period, you might think that this was Lancia’s magnum opus - a perfect car they could never improve upon. But, improving upon it is precisely what Lancia did with its replacement, the Flaminia.
Much like its predecessor, Lancia offered a range of body styles, including this svelte coupé, bodied in aluminium over a lightweight ‘Superleggera’ frame by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan. The Aurelia’s drivetrain was improved upon too, with the maximum engine capacity raised from 2.5 to 2.8-litres, and the front suspension significantly upgraded to a double-wishbone coil spring setup with an anti-roll bar. The V6, transaxle and De Dion tube remained, ensuring Lancia’s new flagship handled as well, if not better than its multiple-race winning forerunner.
We’re delighted to present this 1965 GT - the short-wheelbase, two-seater version. It’s what’s known as the ‘3C’, which stands for “tre carburatori” or “three carburettor”, which means it has a very respectable 150 horsepower. As you can see in the photographs, our car has been subtly prepared for rally events, as discreet additional switchgear has been fitted along with Vredestein Snow+ tyres, and the bumpers have been removed to save weight and contribute to the motorsport-inspired aesthetic. Elsewhere, the Lancia remains factory standard, giving the next owner a choice whether to embark on rallying adventures or enjoy the Lancia as a road car. Why not both?!
Impeccably presented throughout and benefitting from a recent professional mechanical rebuild, this rare, beautiful and capable classic Lancia awaits its following custodian, whom we deeply envy.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK road registered since August 2000
  • Originally registered in Greece
  • Four former (UK) registered keepers
  • 13,973 km indicated
  • Mechanical rebuild reportedly carried out in March 2024
  • Notes the window sticker from the 2005 Winter Challenge rally
  • We understand that the car comes with a workshop manual and various invoices

The Condition

  • We’re informed that the car has recently been repainted
  • Vredestein tyres (rear) and Michelin tyres (front)
  • Fifteen-inch steel wheels with hubcaps
  • The vendor notes that the seats are trimmed in leather although the other red upholstery is a matching vinyl
  • We’re informed that the original bumpers accompany the car
  • Now fitted with small ’bumperette’ trims around each of the original bumper mounting points
  • Chrome ‘GB’ badge affixed at the rear
  • Stunning Jaeger instrumentation
  • Thin wood-rimmed sorts steering wheel
  • Various additional switches affixed to a radio blanking plate, complete with period-style Dymo labels
You don’t need us to tell you this Lancia is beautiful. Just look at it.
The bodywork was made designed and made by Touring in their trademark ‘Superleggera’ style, forming lightweight aluminium panels over an intricate steel frame. As the short-wheelbase GT model, there are no rear seats which makes for a very svelte roof line.
We note that this example presents supremely well, reportedly following a quite recent respray. The paint and chrome finishes look fantastic and we like the way the bumpers have been substituted by discrete ‘bumperettes’ at each corner, with the number plates applied instead to the bodywork in vinyl form. The interior shoes remarkably little in the way of wear and we understand the cabin electrics to be in good working order.

The Mechanics

  • 2.8-litre V6 with three carburettors
  • Four-speed manual gearbox (transaxle)
  • Mechanical restoration by Hexagon of Highgate in March 2024
  • Superbly presented under the bonnet
Lancias of this period are some of the most precise cars you’ll ever experience. Their low mass, excellent weight distribution and brilliantly engineered chassis ensure they’re utterly delightful to drive - and rather quick for their day. In ‘3C’ form, this Superleggera SWB Flaminia is surely one of the finest factory specifications you’ll come across.
We’re informed that the mechanicals were professionally restored in March 2024 and as a result, the Lancia is said to drive exactly as it should. All looks wonderful under the bonnet and we’re not informed of any known issues or untoward noises.
