The appeal

The appeal of an E-type is well known and one that surely needs no introduction, but we can certainly try. With production of the ‘Series 1’ running from 1961 to 1968 it was initially designed for export only with a domestic market release coming four months after its initial export market release.
The E-Type has amassed a huge number of accolades and records since its release and a legion of adoring fans and enthusiasts, to name all its achievements here would take far more space and time than we have available.
This particular example has been patiently restored in recent years, with the help of a well-known restorer, to reach the point it stands at today. Now completed and with the owner not using the car to the extent they thought they would, they thought it better to pass the car on so that it may be used as intended as it has a lot of years or motoring to catch up on.

The history and paperwork

  • MOT test valid until 29/03/2023
  • Chassis records document from Jaguar
  • West Virginia certificate of title
  • Current owner purchase receipt dated 1989
  • Brochures
  • Restoration photos
  • Folder full of miscellaneous invoices and receipts
The car was restored over a few years after sitting for a long while, it is now complete and is ready to go. The owner has taken their time as well as putting in a huge amount of effort, finance, and pride into the restoration. The paperwork folder is an impressive backtracking exercise in documenting the car’s history and comes neatly organised in its own folder.

The Interior

  • Restored grey upholstery with blue trim
  • Wood rimmed steering wheel
  • Classic looking Radiomobile
  • All dials and gauges functioning as they should, even the clock
The interior is a grey leather upholstery trim with blue carpets and black dash and back section. It is in good condition with no rips, tears of excessive wearing of the seats. There is only a very small section of piping that has come undone on the centre console.

The carpets are clean, and the metal work underneath is in good shape too. The hood is a nice tight fit and easy to put up and down and the mechanism is in good shape too. Three-point seat belts give a little extra safety and come with embossed jaguar logos. All dials and gauges are reported to be working as intended and the car fired into life dutifully and idled well on the choke.

The Exterior

  • Classic looking blue on blue shows off the body lines well
  • Wire wheels are in good condition
  • All trim and chrome in good condition too
  • Twin exhausts give a lovely sound
The exterior of the E-types are one of their best qualities, achingly beautifully with long flowing lines and a huge bonnet to hide the straight six engine underneath. This car is in very good shape after being restored by the current owner.

There are very few (if any) dents of chips as the car hasn’t seen that many miles since being restored and as such the paint is in good condition with a fresh layer of wax to give it some more protection. Wire wheels are in good condition with little corrosion or damage, the chrome trim is the same. With the hood up the car has an extra level of sleekness and appeal and as shown in the photo gallery below, did a good job of keeping the rain out.

The Mechanics

  • 4.2L straight six engine
  • Restored engine and transmission
  • Triple carburettors
  • Ready to be driven
The mechanics have been given a restorative treatment by the current owner to bring them back up to their fighting fit condition currently. The straight six fired up on cue and idled civilly whilst on and off choke. The car didn’t give any worrying noises on the short few meters manoeuvring around the photoshoot location and the owner reports that it drives well. All the frame of the car is restored and has little to no corrosion from what we could see. Everything works as it should, even the clock!

Summary

A lovely early Series 1 E type with matching numbers and an interesting history, lovingly and painstakingly restored by an enthusiastic and capable owner. Lovely interior and wonderful straight six powerplant, if the photos are to be believed (they are) then this is a great looking car ready to be driven and enjoyed, it’s a series 1, 4.2L Jaguar E-type if that doesn’t get your heart racing then we don’t know what will.
