The Appeal
In 1965 Ford evolved the Mustang formula with the Fastback, a sinuous coupe style that went on to underpin two of the greatest Mustangs of all time, the Bullitt car and of course the Shelby GT350.
The key with any Mustang purchase is to find the perfect specification. Ideally factory-supplied rather than later modifications. Much of the car’s original success was down to the huge range of personalisation offered by Ford, covering engine, interior and exterior components.
This gorgeous ’65 Fastback is one of the best specified Mustangs we have seen. Finished in Raven Black with the factory GT Equipment package and A-code 289CI Windsor V8, it also has a manual box and even air conditioning. Those features were factory fitted rather than later enhancements.
It comes to us in superb condition. There is a significant history file as well as some light mechanical modifications to further tantalise the buyer’s interest. If you’re looking for a Mustang and only the very best factory specification and condition will do, this car must surely be on your shortlist.

For a car built for wide, mass production it is remarkable how beautifully detailed the Mustang is.The Fastback is a particularly clever and stylish evolution of the original shape, turning the car into a genuine 2+2 GT to rival anything available at the time from Europe.
Whether admiring the Raven Black paintwork of this car or peering inside at the magnificent interior, this car exudes style. The factory-fitted GT package certainly helps here, adding desirable exterior and interior addenda, as do the Shelby-style American Racing alloys. But they merely enhance what is already a compelling package.
This car is in superb condition with no visible corrosion and straight, clean panel fit. The floors were replaced prior to 2021 but it has been used sparingly and otherwise appears not to have required structural improvement. Likely its life in warm climates in Mallorca and California have contributed.
This is a very well specified Mustang with the added appeal of those features having been factory fitted.
The Mechanics
- 4,727cc 289CI small block A-Code Windsor V8 generating 255bhp
- Factory fitted 4spd manual gearbox and Air Conditioning
- Standard mechanicals with some desirable light modifications
- These include a Holley carb, Edelbrock intake manifold and Magnaflow exhaust system
- Fuel tank replaced with genuine Ford parts prior to 2021
A shortlist of desirable Mustang specification is likely to involve 289CI A-code Windsor power and four speed manual box. Many cars have been latterly converted to that specification but this car left the San Jose factory in May 1965 so equipped.
It remains largely standard, just some choice Holley, Edelbrock and Magnaflow enhancements added to improve the driving experience. The seller specifically notes that the vehicle sounds incredible through Magnaflow exhaust system, here's hoping the neighbours agree!
The history file shows regular and considerable ongoing investment to keep the car in top condition. All parts were sourced from UK or USA Mustang specialists and notable include a new clutch in 2013 and new fuel tank prior to 2021.
The car was last MOT’d in August 2016 but has only covered 1,000 miles since then. The last test had no advisories and considering the photographic condition and limited use looks well set if the buyer wished to re-test it. Of course this is not a legal requirement on a historic car such as this one.
