  • Part of a private collection owned by a professional historic F1 racing driver

The Appeal

If they’d given Steve McQueen this Mustang, we reckon that car chase in ‘Bullitt’ would have been quite a bit shorter…
This 700 bhp ‘65 Fastback restomod is, without doubt, one of the most exciting cars money can buy. Following a no-expense-spared build process in which all the car’s major components were replaced or reconditioned, an immense amount of time has been devoted to make this one of the most exhilarating drives around. At this Mustang’s heart, we find a  427 cu in (7.0-litre) Ford Racing V8 which sends its immense power to the rear wheels via a new five-speed manual gearbox.
Brimming with exquisite details and custom flourishes including billet aluminium switchgear, a full roll cage, competition-spec fuel system and painted stripes, this car is impeccably finished, highly presented and effectively in ‘as-new’ condition.
It would suit an enthusiast who wishes to further develop the car to meet their requirements or else is raring and ready to be enjoyed as-is.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK road registered
  • The digital odometer currently reads 116 kilometres
  • Left-hand drive
  • The nature of the restoration/modification work was so extensive that the car is to be considered ‘as-new’
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing

The Interior

  • Billet aluminium switchgear
  • Aftermarket Smiths instrumentation
  • Bespoke black leather upholstery with contrasting white stitching and embossed ‘GT427’ motifs
  • Bucket sports seats
  • OMP harnesses
  • Full custom roll cage
  • Carpeted throughout, still fitted with door cards and a headlining
  • Infinity sound system
  • The boot is dominated by the competition-spec fuel system
Masterfully retrimmed in such a way that effortlessly blends the old and the new, this Mustang’s interior looks utterly magnificent. The full roll cage, bucket seats and OMP harnesses provide a motorsport feel and of course, provide you the opportunity to drive this car on track. The vendor points out the exquisite billet aluminium switchgear and the white-faced Smiths instruments are in fit perfectly with the competition theme.
Offsetting these hard-edged sporty features, we still find carpeting, door cards, a headlining (with sun visors) and high-end audio system. Clearly, this car has been optimised for fast road use as well as the occasional stint on track, so there’s ample luxury to make this a really nice place to be. We understand that the seats are really comfortable and we particularly like the embossed GT427’ motifs sewn into the backs.
The controls all feel thoroughly vintage, with a small sports steering wheel, Hurst-style shifter with white ‘pool ball’ gear knob and carefully spaced competition pedals. These prove the perfect interface for engaging with this Ford’s 700 bhp performance as well as looking just right in a ‘60s Mustang.
Having covered barely any distance since completion, there’s no discernable wear at all to the interior and it’s abundantly clear the trimming and refitting work was carried out to the highest standard.

The Exterior

  • Blue paintwork with an excellent high gloss finish
  • The prominent white racing stripes are painted, rather than vinyls applied to the paint
  • The bodywork has been given a more muscular stance
  • De-bumpered at the front and the rear bumper has been skillfully ‘frenched’ into the bodywork
  • A full caustic dip was carried out prior to refinishing
  • Shelby alloy wheels akin to those seen on racing cars in period
  • Kumho performance tyres
  • No damage, corrosion or wear to be seen
In standard form, a 1965 Fastback Mustang is a great-looking car, but this one has been taken to another level with innumerable bodywork modifications. There’s now a real sense of power derived from its muscular haunces and purposeful stance, which is of course matched by the contents of the engine compartment.
We’re in awe of the high level of finish, with deep gloss blue paintwork and stripes that are painted rather than applied as a vinyl. Evidently, a considerable effort has been made to achieve the best possible finish with this car and everywhere you look, all has been executed to a breathtaking standard. The Shelby wheels were a great choice as they’re very appropriate for the period and fill those swollen arches perfectly.
The bodywork is perfectly straight, with precise panel alignment, crisp swage lines and no corrosion in sight. It’s the same story underneath and having been barely used since completion, there isn’t even any road grime to contend with.

The Mechanics

  • 427 cu in (7.0-litre) Ford Racing V8
  • Holley Performance intake
  • MSD ignition system
  • Bespoke racing fuel system
  • Aluminium radiator
  • New five-speed manual gearbox
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • We’re informed that this setup produces 700 bhp
If there’s one engine that speaks to the soul more than any other, it’s the V8. Here we have one of the largest and most well set up Ford V8s around, reportedly procuring 700 bhp in its current state of tune. If that wasn’t enough to tempt you, there’s a five-speed manual gearbox to play with as well…
The vendor describes this car’s performance as “relentless” and you really couldn’t want for any more power from a rear-wheel drive ‘60s car with no driver aids. As you’d imagine, it sounds like thunder and the vendor demonstrates that the engine starts readily, running exactly as it should. With a few miles now under its belt to run it in and iron out any foibles, we understand that this car is ready to drive.

Summary

If you like to scare yourself on a regular basis and look incredibly cool while doing it, we can heartily recommend this Mustang restomod. With quite frankly ridiculous reserves of power, an amazing level of finish everywhere you look and an unrivalled soundtrack to ever drive, this has to be the ultimate ‘60s American restomod.
