The Appeal

There’s something special about British sports cars which is rather difficult to pin down.
They possess the singular ability to make you grin from ear to ear which has long made them coveted fun machines the world over.
This 1964 Triumph TR4 is no exception having lived in the US, UK, Sweden and France in its lifetime. Comprehensively restored in 2014, it is a very fine specimen that will continue to deliver British sports car thrills whether it goes next.

The History and Paperwork

  • CT valid until 2027
  • Constructed in late December 1964, one of the last off the Coventry production line before the new TR4A
  • Exported to Phoenix, Arizona in the USA in January 1965
  • Originally New White
  • 26,490 miles indicated on the odometer
  • After 25 years of use in the dry state of Arizona it was stored in a barn for 20 years
  • Returned to the UK in a container along with several other restoration projects
  • Renovation work began in 2013 with a body-off, bare-metal nut-and-bolt restoration and engine rebuild which was photographed at every stage
  • Destined for export, the Triumph began life as a left-hand drive model
  • Restored as a right-hand drive car and was UK registered as FNA 279C
  • 200+ photo file documenting the restoration
  • Entered in the 2014 Triumph Sports Six Club South of England Show in 2014 where it won Best TR and Best in Show and was granted a certificate of concours
  • An Englishman living in Stockholm, Sweden saw the car at the show and bought it
  • Subsequently re-converted to left-hand drive by TRGB.
  • The car was exported to Sweden, registered as ZKN 924, and was kept in a centrally-heated garage
  • Acquired by the vendor in June 2020
  • Registered in France with a certification by the Fédération Française des Véhicules d’Epoque
  • Cylinder head replaced by Classic and Modern Engine Services of Bracknell so the car would run on unleaded petrol
  • The car has covered fewer than 4,000 miles since the 2014 restoration

The Interior

  • Walnut dashboard
  • Mota-Lita steering wheel
  • Now left-hand drive once more
Having been restored to a high standard not many miles ago, this TR4 is very smart inside with everything having been reupholstered, restored or replaced.
The blue leather seats and door cards both sport contrasting cream piping and present extremely well. The same goes for the matching carpets which have little in the way of wear we could see.
The walnut dashboard appears in very good order, with no damage we could discern.
For French roads, the vendor has added labels to the speedometer as it reads in miles per hour. All the instrumentation apparently works as it should and is in fine order.

The Exterior

  • Professionally painted in Wedgwood Blue - originally New White
  • Minilite style wheels
  • Mohair roof and tonneau
  • Rear luggage rack
During the extensive restoration process, the body was removed from the chassis. A glance underneath this TR4 reveals that no fastening has been left unturned and there isn’t any corrosion we could see.
The body was painted Wedgwood Blue, where it was New White originally. This has evidently been carried out to an exemplary standard and there are no notable blemishes anywhere we could see, even 8 years on.
The Triumph now sports a dark blue mohair roof which raises and lowers smoothly. The vendor informs us that a black tonneau cover is supplied also.
It sits upon Minilite style wheels and we understand the tyres to be in good order. Additionally there is a spare steel wheel in the boot.

The Mechanics

  • In 2014 the engine, gearbox and overdrive were rebuilt by Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead
  • The rear axle was reconditioned by the Classics division of Jim Stokes in Waterlooville
  • Banda Engineering in Portsmouth reconditioned the crankshaft
  • New heavy duty battery fitted
Mechanically, this TR4 is in fine fettle, the vendor reporting that it feels tight, responsive and strong out on the road.
The mechanical components have all been restored by British specialists, resulting in a car that starts, runs and drives very well.
The 4-cylinder engine is fitted with two Stomberg 175 carburettors and was reconditioned by Hardy Engineering in 2014.

The vendor has subsequently had a different head fitted by Modern Engine Services in Bracknell, who fitted unleaded-friendly valves. Additionally an electric fan has been fitted and the car now uses modern Evans waterless coolant.

Summary

This is a beautifully restored example of the legendary Triumph TR4 and it is in lovely condition.
With a well documented history and in fine mechanical shape, this TR4 would make a fantastic addition to any collection and is ready to be used and enjoyed.
