The Appeal
Like its arch rivals in hits home town and Oxford, in the immediate post-war years the Rootes Group was chasing American export dollars. To fight the fight it created the Alpine. American-influenced styling helped these cars sell well in their early years.
The Alpine was based on Hillman’s saloons but with a peppy 1.6litre engine it is both sprightly and engaging to drive. It evolved through several versions, the MkIV of 1964 dialling back the American influence by all but removing the fins, which modernised the look.
First registered in April 1964, this RHD MkIV began life in the UK. Fitted with desirable factory overdrive it is pleasingly standard with the welcome addition of a Holbay head. It is solid and usable but there is scope to improve. Approached as a rolling restoration this is an opportunity to enjoy a great British two-seater whilst making it your own.
