THE APPEAL
Since it’s conception in 1947, The aerodynamic Saab 92 and subsequent models, including the 96, have an overriding quirky charm all of their own, and in the hands of Swedish Rally driver Erik Carlsson (and others), the Saab 96 enjoyed huge international rally success during the 1960’s.
Possibly restored some time ago, this Swedish sensation is in great shape and is described by the owner, collector and engineer, as a “mock sport” rally-inspired example.
Featuring a single carburettor rather than the triple carbs’ that the true ‘sport’ model offered, this 96 has been fitted with a period Robo roof spot light, Cibie and Lucas lamps, front disc brakes, a rev-counter and map reading light. Genuine Ronal/Saab alloys also set the car off a treat.
Driven just over 1,000 km since it’s import, the owner has enjoyed driving it to local car shows and events, including Goodwood Revival.
So if you relish the idea of driving an unconventional, engaging, and above all fun classic, then look no further than this stunning Saab 96.

Naturally a bit smokey on start up, the owner informs us that this engine starts easily with a little choke and runs well with no untoward noises or overheating problems. It is necessary to keep the spark plugs in tip-top condition and remember to add a ratio of 33:1 low smoke two-stroke oil to the fuel, but otherwise, it is simple to maintain.
SUMMARY
We had the pleasure of taking this little Saab for a short run. The free-revving, exhaust popping, two-stroke, happily nips along and is such a laugh to drive. It went though the gears with ease, the steering was direct and the brakes efficient.
Obviously well cared for and loved by the previous owner(s), this interesting Saab 96 is a great usable show car, or dare we say, with just a few additional upgrades, a potential road rally contender?.
