1964 Land Rover Series IIA

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Fantastic glossy paintwork
  •  Original specification cab
  •  Desirable 2.25-litre petrol engine
  •  Low annual mileage since 2014
  •  Great investment potential

THE APPEAL

Following in the off-road tracks of earlier models, the Series IIA was built from 1961 to 1971 and continued the tradition of rugged, workhorse reliability.
This shining SWB example is in very good shape and looks fantastic from every angle in it’s coat of Limestone paint. It is the perfect partner for a range of pursuits and activities and appears to be mechanically up together.
With lots of Land Rover variants to choose from the Series IIA is arguably the most popular, practical and fun all-rounder to go for.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  •  Exported to North Africa from new
  •  Registered in the U.K on the 1st February 1970
  •  V5 present (in vendor’s father’s name)
  •  Some service history will be included
  •  The speedo may have been changed around 2013 at approximately 6,000 miles
  •  Last (exempt) ’Pass’ MOT was in November 2017 (speedo reading of 17 miles)
  •  Unconfirmed current mileage due (in part) to a broken speedo cable
  •  Exempt road tax runs until 1st November 2023
  •  2 sets of keys
The vendor informs us that this Land Rover was exported to North Africa in 1964 and re-patriated to the U.K. in February 1970.
The vendor’s father then acquired it on the 16th September 2014 and has enjoyed ‘pottering’ around the Sussex countryside - covering very few miles.
Although not present on the day of the photoshoot, we understand that the vendor’s father has a selection of maintenance invoices and other associated paperwork.

THE INTERIOR

  •  Nice looking unmolested cab commensurate with it’s age
  •  Original steering wheel and switchgear
  •  Jaeger ammeter, fuel and oil pressure gauges
  •  Replacement Smiths speedometer
  •  New speedo cable required
  •  Electrical equipment is said to function correctly
  •  Three excellent replacement vinyl seats
  •  Inertia seat belts fitted
  •  Electrical cut-off switch and fire extinguisher
  •  Vin-number / 4-wheel drive instruction plate in-situ
  •  Solid floor
  •  Tidy and clean plate-lined rear load space
  •  Tool storage box / petrol can / usable spare
  •  Tailgate would benefit from a refurbishment
Inside, the cab is to original specification and has a pleasing degree of patina.

THE EXTERIOR

  •  Glossy paintwork with no significant damage
  •  Repainted (from purple!) around 2014
  •  Nice grille and galvanised front bumper
  •  Single-piece windscreen (rather than twin) with painted frame
  •  The glass and lighting are all in good condition
  •  Excellent canvas top and a bikini hood included
  •  £800 spent on welding to the chassis (see photos and online MOT)
  •  Chassis would benefit from a weekend’s painting/rust protection
  •  Towbar (no electrics)
  •  Four new General Grabber AT3 tyres surround the original steel wheels
The aluminium body is very straight and ding-free with well fitting panels and all the fixtures and fittings are extremely presentable. Happily, the steel door frames, structural bulkhead and chassis appear to be strong.

THE MECHANICS

  •  Reverse-opening bonnet reveals a presentable compartment
  •  Some remaining purple paint on the inner wings
  •  Desirable 2,286 cc 4-cylinder petrol engine
  •  4-speed transmission plus transfer gears
  •  Replacement carburettor
  •  Alternator conversion and dual fan belts
  •  Believed to be a standard ignition system
  •  Recent new battery
  •  Recent new exhaust
  •  Steering and brakes are said to operate as expected
  •  Leaf springs appear fine if a little corroded
  •  Simple DIY mechanicals
  •  Affordable and readily available parts

SUMMARY

With a restored body and recent mechanical expenditure, this capable classic ‘Landy’ looks great and is the perfect base for further improvement, should you wish.
In addition to being MOT and tax exempt, it is also likely to be cheap to insure.
The vendor assures us that it runs and drives well, doesn’t wander, has a nice gearbox and clutch, and is ready to “jump in and go”.
