The Appeal

The Jaguar MkII, loved by celebrities and getaway drivers alike, is an iconic piece of British motoring history. This particular example of the legendary motorcar has been meticulously cared for over decades, having been subject to extensive work to both restore and maintain its remarkable standard. This car was featured as an exemplary MkII at the 1995 Jaguar 60th Anniversary meeting at the Browns Lane plant, Coventry, UK.
The car has been restored both visually and mechanically at different times in its life with the most recent work being carried out to the mechanics, including a complete rebuild of the 3.4L engine, overhauled braking system and the addition of power steering. Very few Jaguar MkIIs have been loved and preserved as well as this car whilst still being used on the road.

History and Paperwork

  • Built in June 1964, delivered to Henley’s Jaguar (UK)
  • Discovered as a barn find in the early 90’s after approximately 20 years in hiding
  • Bare metal restoration in 1994 by RS Coachworks of Reading – invoices included in the sale
  • Imported to Massachusetts USA in 2000
  • Returned to the UK in 2018
  • Full engine rebuild in 2020
  • Comprehensive records (pictures and invoices) showing previous work
  • MOT until July 2023

The Interior

  • Sympathetically preserved
  • Green carpets and leather seats
  • Wood trim and dashboard
The Jaguar MkII is known for being one of the first luxury sports saloons and with an interior as clean as it is, this example proves that fact right. The green leather seats combined with the restored wood trim throughout the cabin make for a stylish place to be, worthy of the MkII moniker. The seats wear some slight patination, lending this Jaguar a lovely original feel.
Climbing into the driver’s seat, you feel the quality of the varnished wooden steering wheel and take note of the beautiful array of dials, toggles and switches, capturing the essence of 1960s performance motoring.
From a comfortable and slightly elevated position in the rear seats,  passengers enjoy an excellent view over the beautifully well-maintained cabin with every feature looking just as resplendent as it was when the car left the factory in 1964. This is attributed to an in-depth interior and exterior restoration which has been exquisitely maintained to date.

The Exterior

  • Beautiful and iconic styling
  • Opalescent Dark Green
  • Underneath protected thanks to undersealed chassis
With the distinctive layout of headlights and grille, the Jaguar leaping its way from the bonnet, and teardrop shape cabin rising from the flowing curve of the body, the Jaguar MkII shape is one of the best in classic automotive design. One can understand why people were so enamoured by the model in its heyday.

This Jaguar is finished in a striking and brilliantly preserved metallic Opalescent Dark Green, which resonates the Jaguar racing colours of the day. The body is then complimented by  factory-finished silver-painted wire spoke wheels.

The bodywork is very fine and the vendor demonstrated to us how well all 4 doors open and close. The brilliant condition of the car’s exterior continues to the underside with a very well-preserved chassis, a result of a thorough Waxoyl underseal. The car should be protected for years to come.
The meticulous current owner points out some minor blemishes on the bodywork that may be visible upon thorough inspection, but these are quite superficial.
Both bumpers were refinished within the last ten years, with the chrome all around still looking in great condition. Even as recently as this year, the roof was subject to a minor paintwork repair and respray.

The Mechanics

  • Over £24,000 of work carried out recently
  • Resprayed engine bay looks amazing
  • Brakes and steering extensively overhauled and upgraded

The current owner informs us that the car wasn’t fully mechanically sound when he took possession of it in 2018. Since then, a great deal of work has gone into ensuring the car could be driven daily or for long distances without any issue.
Work as recent as 2021 has gone into refining and upgrading steering, and brakes, with upgrades including: full hydraulic power steering system, new tyres and new braking system components. According to the vender, this MkII now drives excellently.
During the recent full engine rebuild, the current owner also commissioned installation of a new clutch and cooling system, which ensures the transmission changes gear smoothly while the engine runs excellently.

On the day of the photoshoot, the Jaguar burst into life from cold and soon settled down to a steady idle. The temperature gauge indicated the engine warming up steadily to operating temperature, all the while maintaining strong oil pressure.

Summary

A great deal of work and money has gone into making this Jaguar an excellent example of the iconic MkII - a car that evokes imagery of 1960s bank robberies and police chases in action films from its era.

Today, it’s a gorgeous example in a rare colour scheme, with mechanics you can rely on, plentiful documentation, and ready to turn heads at any motoring event it visits.
