THE CAR'S APPEAL

The Ford Cortina was introduced to the automotive market in September 1962 as a replacement for the Ford Consul Classic and Ford Consul Capri models. It was designed to offer an affordable, practical and stylish family car option for the British automotive market.

Bryan Wingfield's daughter Kate now owns this particular car and coaxed it from the owner Paul (who you will see in Jonny Smith's video) to help raise funds as Bryan raced 1950's and 60's fords as a young man, before making his mark on the world of GT40's.
The Cortina Consul MK1 was available in various trims and engine options, with the “Super” being the more upscale version that Ford offered. It featured a clean and contemporary design for its time and was influenced heavily by American car styling trends at the time. It has a distinctively modern appearance with a prominent grille, elegant lines and a relatively spacious cabin.  It became a best seller and was one of the most recognised cars on the UK roads during the 60s.
This particular example had been squirrelled away in a garage in Romford, Essex for approximately 40 years. It recently shot to fame when journalist, Jonny Smith featured it on his hugely popular YouTube series, The Late Brake Show where the video has amassed 11.1 million views in just a matter of months.
Given that the car had been sitting for numerous years, in a damp garage, its condition is surprising with minimal signs of rust and ageing. As far as barn finds go, this Cortina is in fantastic shape.

  • The seats are in original condition and largely present well with only a few imperfections to note

  • The front seats do show blemishes in places, but we suspect this is due to the age of the vehicle, rather than due to use
  • Steering wheel presents well and showing no obvious defects
  • The door cards also look fantastic but do show some marks
  • We suspect that with a little bit of love and TLC, these will be back looking their best in no time at all
  • Headlining seems to present well but is showing signs of age in places
  • The dashboard is presenting well with the original material still in place with no signs of damage that we noticed
  • Optional extra Ford radio is present

  • The NSR arch has unfortunately rotted and will need looking at
  • The Cortina is mostly free from corrosion as far as we could tell
  • Headlights and rear lights appear to be in good condition with no signs of fading or sun damage that we noticed on any of the lenses
  • Brightwork and trim placed around the Cortina are showing signs of pitting in places but generally looks to be in a respectable condition
  • Seals around the glass are looking worn and would benefit at some point in time from being replaced
  • They are, as far as we are aware, still watertight

THE MECHANICS

  • Engine is a 1198c OHV-3 bearing crank, which was designed for fuel efficiency and reliability
  • This is mated to a 4 speed manual full synchromesh gearbox
  • The engine outputs 48BHP and 66Lb-ft of torque
  • Braking is taken care of by a full set of Non servo drum brakes on the rear and disc brakes up front
  • The Cortina uses McPherson struts at the front and leaf springs on the rear
  • Low miles at 21,581 showing on the vehicle's cluster
  • After some fettling by Bryans's son in law the cortina now runs, drives and starts on the turn of the key
  • However it has a minor misfire which has not been investigated
  • We are informed that the ride is as you would expect, but please remember this is a barn find and will need full recommissioning
  • No signs of any leaks or unwanted noises when the car is running
