You might wonder what the history of this Alpine A110 is. And while the general public may not know that there was a cabriolet version of this model, connoisseurs do.
Jean Redele, the boss of Alpine, always wanted to offer a cabriolet. An aborted project with Paris coachbuilder Chappen & Gesselin led to a more traditional design by Michelotti. The cabriolet was offered alongside the Berlinetta, culminating in the more powerful A110 equipped with that car's Renault 8S engine. These latter models are considered to be the most sought-after.
Only 30 of these expensive bodied cars were built. Only 20 of them, worldwide, are thought to have survived. In the last decade, only two have appeared on the resale market.
All of which makes this car an unmissable opportunity for collectors. It is complete, solid and mechanically in very good condition thanks to a rebuilt engine and a stripped and restored chassis. Some cosmetic adjustments are needed inside and out, but it looks like an excellent base for improvement work.

Alpine turned to Michelotti to create its cabriolet, preferring a more traditional, less modern design that would stand the test of time. Looking at this very pretty car, you can see that it works. It cleverly mixes panels shared with the A110 Berlinetta with a bespoke rear end that resembles the contemporary Renault Caravelle. Like the hardtop, some Renault parts are incorporated, such as the rear lights from the Renault 4.
This car left the factory painted in Montebello grey but is now finished in cream. The chassis has been stripped and restored - as you can see from the photographs - but the fibreglass body, although complete and clean, would benefit from preparation and a new paint job.
The interior is in similar condition, with the original black seats in need of reupholstering, but the dashboard and carpets are in good condition.
This is a car where most of the hard work - namely the chassis work - has been done. This leaves an interesting and seemingly straightforward project for the buyer.

The 1963 A110 got more power from the V70 Type engine in the R8S. These are light, agile cars that maximise the relatively small size of their engines. The engine in this car was completely rebuilt. It was mated to a Renault 8 4-speed synchronised gearbox but benefited from a Ferry pipe and a larger Weber 40DCOE carburettor which improved performance.
Thanks to recent improvements, the car is in good mechanical health. The vendor advises that the fuel tank is leaking and will require refurbishment or replacement but otherwise the car runs and drives well.
