1963 Triumph Tiger 90

Highlights

  • Lovely original example of the ‘Bikini’ type body – only produced for one year in 1963
  • Recommissioned in recent years and reported to be running well
  • Subtle practical upgrades such as electronic ignition and indicators
  • Dry stored whilst in current ownership and presents in wonderful condition
  • A fabulous looking bike from the golden age of motorcycling

The Appeal

First appearing in 1962 for the 1963 model year and enjoying a total production run until 1968, the Triumph Tiger 90 represented a development of an earlier model, the Triumph Twenty-One.
Replacing the earlier model’s ‘bathtub’ fairing with the sleeker new ‘bikini’ type (only produced in 1963), the Tiger 90 was aiming to appeal to a more youthful market. The new look of the Tiger 90 was also complemented by various mechanical upgrades, including a revised ignition system and higher engine compression to give increased power.
At the Tiger 90’s heart is an air-cooled, 4-stroke vertical twin of 349cc, delivering its 27 bhp via a four-speed gearbox. Combined with a dry weight of only 150kg, the Tiger 90 delivers peppy performance, resulting in a great general purpose road bike, happy whether taking a leisurely Sunday cruise or tackling some twisties!
This Tiger 90 presents in wonderfully original condition and, even 60 years after it first hit the road, still looks fabulous. Its charismatic design perfectly captures the feel of the golden age of motorcycling and this bike’s recommissioning work means its ready to be enjoyed out on the road by its new owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 present confirming 6 previous keepers and first registration 01/03/1963
  • Acquired by the current owner in 2018
  • Recommissioning work undertaken by specialist Bol D’Or Motorcycles in recent years whilst under the current ownership
  • Owner reports workshop manual and some documented history was available, but he is currently trying to locate them and will include in the sale if they can be found

The Condition

  • Lovely original and complete condition
  • Classic colour combination of white over black, beautifully set off by well-presented brightwork and mechanicals
  • Dry stored whilst in current owner’s stewardship
  • Paintwork appears to be in generally good condition with only a few areas of paint flaking noted on the frame of the bike
  • Brightwork generally very good and complete apart from some minor pitting
From first glance it’s apparent that this Tiger 90 presents in a lovely original and complete condition, this has clearly been a well-loved bike. The vendor reports that the bike is free of any significant damage and that the paintwork presents in a very good condition, contrasting pleasingly against the plentiful chrome highlights.
The subtle modifications such as the modern indicators have been added in a tasteful and reversible manner, a clear ‘indication’ perhaps of the careful approach of the current owner to the bike’s condition.

The Mechanics

  • Recent thorough recommissioning work completed by Bol D’Or Motorcycles
  • Work included replacement shock absorbers, wiring overhaul and a full service
  • Owner reports usually starts easily with first kick and settles into smooth tick-over
  • A few years back the vendor completed a 70-mile ride as part of the Triumph Owner’s Motorcycle Club anniversary celebrations without any incident
  • Sensible subtle upgrades include electronic ignition and modern indicators, adding further practicality
  • Tyres reported to be in good condition
  • Replacement speedometer reported to be working well but reported mileage is therefore incorrect
The vender reports that this bike runs as well as it looks, which is to say very well indeed. The bike is reported to start keenly, usually with the first kick and then idle smoothly without any undue smoke or noise. The vendor reports that the bike has been well maintained in recent years under his ownership and is now in a great running condition.

Summary

A lovely example of an early Triumph Tiger 90 motorcycle. Perfectly proportioned and reported to be in fine running condition - truly an iconic bike from the golden age of motorcycling and ready for its next adventure!
