THE APPEAL
Classic, charming and collectable, the Land Rover Series I, II and IIA are iconic vintage British 4x4s and exemplary examples of post-war British engineering. These all-terrain, go-anywhere vehicles provided the means for many to cross borders and conquer lands, travelling to places roads had yet to reach.
The Series IIA is very much the most recognised model and the vehicle most associated with the words classic Land Rover. No doubt thanks to its familiar presence in early television documentaries and films where it frequented the plains of Africa.
This lovely example, nicknamed Auntie Vera, was first registered in 1963 and has covered just shy of 86,000 miles in those 59 years. Recent body restoration and respray have resulted in a gorgeous and attractive example of the iconic classic.

THE INTERIOR
- Factory utilitarian layout
- Three vinyl seats
- Few blemishes present
- Bulkhead recently reinforced
Inside the Land Rover, you’re greeted with utilitarian simplicity. Built to be hardwearing and tough the interior is purposeful rather than stylish but is exactly what makes these off-road icons great. There are areas of wear throughout with the seats containing marks and scuffs. The dash and floors are however in good order, thanks to that full body respray. The rear is clean and tidy thanks to some added carpet, the inside of the hardtop contains a few marks but nothing substantial. Overall, it's a pleasant interior kept to its original splendid factory design.
THE EXTERIOR
- Repainted Original Light Green Colour
- Restored in 2020
- Great condition
- Minor blemishes present
Thanks to a full body restoration in 2020 by Land Rover specialist Tamar Country Cars in Cornwall, this classic Landy is in great order. The choice of colour, a pale green combined with the creme/off-white hardtop provides an elegant and tasteful appearance. There are a few tiny blemishes present, mainly on the steel wheels and a small bit of surface rust on the grill but otherwise, the vehicle looks gorgeous. Without question, its capable and rugged appearance will forever be recognised as one of the most iconic classics around the globe.
THE MECHANICS
- 2.25L 4-Cylinder Petrol
- Minor oil leaks observed, as befits any Land Rover of this vintage.
- Only 1,000 miles covered since 2012
During our visit, the car was started and manoeuvred multiple times and each time the 4-cylinder petrol kicked into action with a familiar chug and roar. The current owners report no faults and that Auntie Vera drives well, with the same characteristics all vintage Landys come with. The mechanics were inspected and overhauled by the Land Rover specialist Tamar Country Cars before them offering it up for sale with recent additional replacement items such as fuse box, wiper motors and lights were replaced.
SUMMARY
A British and worldwide icon, the Series IIA was a groundbreaking vehicle. It was one of the first mass-produced 4x4s plus the first to reach many areas of the globe where horses and camels were still the solution. From medicine to Hollywood stars, the classic Land Rover was a vital part of the modern world and as such one of the most iconic classics and pleasant addition to any collection.
