1963 Lancia Appia Coupé

Video at the bottom of the listing

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Fully restored circa 2012 with only 3,000km done since
  • Impressive two-tone blue and ivory paintwork
  • Rare original five-speed gearbox
  • Registered in Italy with a "Targa Oro" by ASI

THE APPEAL

In the final year of Lancia’s Appia, Pininfarina were brought in to make for a more stylish, flamboyant finale to a proud run of production. Cue tail fins, wrap-around front and rear screens, plenty of chrome… pure 60s glitz.
This Lancia Appia Coupé is presented in very good condition and benefits from having been restored around twelve years ago. The accompanying photographic record shows its body stripped back to the bare metal before being resprayed in dark blue with a contrasting ivory roof.
There are also photographs of the V4 engine being disassembled and rebuilt, and the car benefits from the rare five-speed manual gearbox. The vendor informs us that the car has done no more than 3,000km since the restoration was completed.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • First registered in 1963
  • ‘Revisione’ (Italian MOT equivalent) valid until February 2023
  • Copy of original hand written documentation on file
  • Fully restored around ten years ago
  • Photographs of the restoration included
  • Car indicates 97,440km on a five-figure odometer
  • Sadly, this can’t be verified as an authentic mileage

THE INTERIOR

  • Fully retrimmed interior
  • Period instruments still in situ
  • Impressive blue and grey upholstery

Opening the wide door to this Appia coupé reveals a fully retrimmed interior with lovely clean, grey cloth upholstery and blue vinyl trim. The fabrics appear to be in very good condition considering that the restoration was carried out ten years ago. There are no obvious rips or stains and the covers remain tight.
The door cards match the seats in the same colour - they’re clean and tidy, and feature decent-sized storage pockets. Their chromed window surrounds and handles are in very good condition, exhibiting a deep lustrous shine with very few indications of the car’s age.
On the dashboard, the driver is furnished with a large thin-rimmed steering wheel and a well-positioned set of three large gauges in front. These feature bold ‘60s fonts and are all reportedly in good, working order.
Grey carpets complete the scene and are free from significant stains or damage. To the rear, the boot is lined in black padded vinyl, and there is a full-size spare wheel present.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Two-tone paintwork, resprayed during the restoration and presenting well
  • Impressive Pininfarina bodywork with large wings and plenty of chrome
  • Original period steel wheels

Decked in dark blue and ivory, the two-tone paintwork gives this Appia a very smart look. With its contrasting roof and wrap-around windscreens, this is a beautiful car. The body panels all look to be in very good condition, with no significant dents or misalignment we could see.
Plenty of chrome sparkles throughout: the bumpers, overriders, window trims, handles and badges look very smart. The lamp lenses look clear and bright and the car benefits from spotlights mounted on the front bumper. The glasswork is generally in good order, though we do note some scratches to the windshield - these, however, don’t detract from your visibility when on the road.
The vented steel wheels are painted ivory to match the roof, with impressive Lancia branding. The wheels all appear to be well presented and the tyres are said to be new. And we’re told that there is no damage or corrosion to the underneath of the car.

THE MECHANICS

  • Rebuilt 1090cc V4 engine produces 60hp
  • Rare original Appia five-speed gearbox fitted
  • Photographic evidence of engine rebuild available
Lifting the bonnet of this Appia reveals a V4 engine, which was Lancia’s layout of choice. The 1090cc unit looks very clean and tidy, having been rebuilt and reportedly seen little use since. The vendor has provided photographs of the engine stripped down to its component parts during this rebuild, which is said to have included new pistons, cams and water pump.
We’re told that the manual gearbox fitted is the very rare original five-speed unit. This makes the car very useable in modern traffic and we’re told that the shock absorbers have been replaced.
The vendor informs us that the engine fires up easily and that it accelerates well. There are no reported leaks or smoke and the car is said to change gear smoothly and brake in a straight line.

SUMMARY

Having been resprayed, retrimmed, and rebuilt, this Lancia is bound to seduce even the most cynical enthusiast. We think the blue and ivory colour scheme is particularly suave, with the Pininfarina styling really evoking a feel of the 60s.
