Highlights
- A fine example of the perennially popular MK2 Jaguar in desirable manual overdrive form
- Subject to a series of earlier restorations encompassing mechanicals, exterior and interior
- Presenting in a sought-after livery of Regency Red over sumptuous grey leather
The Appeal
With many admirers, including advocates on both sides of the law, the MK2 Jaguar introduced in 1959, was the epitome of the firm’s “grace, pace and space” mantra. The main obvious enhancement over the MK1 was the much larger glass area, over 18% more, improving visibility and lending the car a more modern persona. With an original retail price of under £2,000 for the 3.4L 210bhp model, nothing else at the time offered so much performance for such a relatively modest outlay.
This fine example has enjoyed some earlier, diligent, and professional attention followed by very modest use resulting in an impressive overall condition. Key upgrades include a fully retrimmed interior, the fitment of fully recommissioned 3.4 engine and running gear around 5,000 miles ago (in 1991) and the fitment of the popular Coombes style open rear arches, giving the car an even more purposeful road presence.
The History & Paperwork
- Our car started life as a Jaguar Mk 2 2.4 manual overdrive in Regency Red
- It was first registered as such in May 1963 and was a UK specified and supplied car
- In 1991 the car was subject to a comprehensive restoration
- This included the fitting of completely re-conditioned 3.4 running gear
- Engine number KH9479-8 was fitted at this stage as were the Coombes style arches
- A little over 5,000 miles has been covered since then
- Between 1999-2001 the car was subject to a full major and professional interior re-trim
- Many exterior chrome parts were replaced at this stage, too
- These included bumpers, rear lights, grille, plinth and new chrome wire wheels
- The car has been dry stored and hardly used since
- Hence it remains in stunning condition with the interior and chrome showing almost no deterioration in storage
- The last change of keeper was noted in 1999
- This MK2 is supplied with a substantial well organised binder of history going back decades
- This comprises various iterations of logbook including the original buff version
- Carefully detailed invoices from the earlier interior restoration are on hand
- Many earlier MOTs in hard copy are present
- So are many invoices for work undertaken and parts sourced
- The MK2 is classified as an Historic Vehicle in the UK
- This attracts both MOT and VED exemptions in the UK
- Two full sets of keys are also on hand
The Condition
- The Regal Red paintwork of the MK2 presents very well indeed
- As pointed out diligent updating and careful storage has paid dividends
- The sophisticated looking paintwork appears appropriately thickly applied
- No obvious dents, dings or scuffs were noted or reported
- The panels gaps look tight and symmetrical for this vintage of car
- The more recently replaced bright work seems to retain a lustrous shine throughout
- Cabin glass and light lenses all appear to be in fine fettle throughout
- The bright chromed wire wheels are affixed with Jaguar inscribed central spinners
- These twin-eared spinners enhance the look of the wheels in a charming period way
- The wheels are shod with a matching set of Vredestein Sprint ST70 tyres
- These are in a 185/70 configuration with plenty of remaining tread in evidence
- The sublime cabin has been reupholstered in a soft-looking Dove Grey leather
- Ample walnut veneer and interior chrome fittings combine to enhance the luxury of the cabin
- The generous front seats are centred with supportive vertical box pleats
- The rear bench is identically trimmed and is centred with a fold down armrest
- Door cards are finished in a matching smooth leather with integral storage pockets
- Walnut veneer cappings are present together with deeply chromed door furniture
- The deep grey carpets are leather edge bound for longevity and luxury
- The walnut fascia is home to a generous set of white on black Smiths gauges
- These sit behind the two spoke Jaguar steering wheel with chrome horn ring
- The original push button radio is fitted and sits ahead of a commodious lidded ashtray
- The generous boot is protected by a fitted rubber mat
- The underfloor area is home to spare wheel and accompanying tools
The Mechanics
- The MK2 was fitted with a fully recommissioned 3.4L XK engine and drivetrain in around 1991
- This much-admired unit was originally rated at around 210bhp
- Such was its capability and reliability that it was a mainstay of many models for many years
- Power is fed to the rear wheels via a four-speed gearbox with switchable overdrive
- It is reported that the Jaguar has done under 5,500 miles since the engine upgrade
- The owner reports that the MK2 starts, drives, and stops as it should do with no known issue
- The under-bonnet presentation is impressive and retains a high degree of originality
- The owner reports that a Kenlowe fan has been fitted
- The underside of the car appears to be admirably solid for this vintage of car
- A stainless-steel exhaust system is also noted under here
- Full Dinitrol rustproofing was reportedly undertaken in 2016
