1963 Dodge Dart GT Convertible

Vendor supplied images

Highlights

  • Highly original American classic
  • 3.7L Slant-6 powerplant with 3-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission
  • One of the most practical American classics for this side of the pond

The Appeal

The 3rd generation of the Dodge Dart was in many ways a progression of decidedly un-American ethos. While most US cars seemed obsessed with being the size of cruise liners, the Dart steadily shrank across its life, until this one - when it officially became a compact.
Of course, this didn’t mean it lost any of its style. This is a beautifully appointed piece of 60s American automobilia, with a distinctive period interior and particularly characterful bodywork. The Dart also, as a result, benefits from the ability to fit down most British streets - unlike a fair few of its peers.
Having arrived in the UK in 2021, this example has had some work done to its suspension, a full brake service and your standard sundries - while maintaining its marvellous patina.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1963 at the Dodge Hamtramck plant, detroit
  • Imported to the UK in late 2020
  • First registered in early 2021
  • The vendor is unaware of any major mechanical modifications
  • The car currently indicates 13,137 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • As ever, this can’t be verified as a true reflection of mileage
  • The car is MOT exempt and hasn’t been tested while in the UK
  • Sadly we’re not aware of any paperwork included with this car

The Interior

  • Stylish period interior with a distinct character
  • White painted dashboard with chrome accents
  • Angular binnacle with characterful trio of square dials and a large speedometer
  • Each instrument is in good order and reportedly working well
  • The original radio is still in situ however it does not operate
  • The branded steering wheel carries some patina
  • The branded seats are in good order and are free of rips and tears
  • Seat belts to both the front and rear are brand new
  • Door cards are in similar condition with good, clean vinyl
  • Some light cracks to the inner door trims
  • The carpets are clean and well-kept, protected by rubber floormats
  • We do note some loose lining to the driver’s footwell
  • The boot has nice, solid floors and conceals a spare wheel

The Exterior

  • Impressive bodywork with distinctive lines and chromework
  • Complete with white matching soft-top
  • Paintwork is in good order throughout
  • Some blistering towards the lower areas of body, though these are largely out of sight
  • Chromework carries the slightest signs of wear
  • Dart branding is all present and correct with light patina
  • The distinctive grille is in good order
  • Lenses and glasswork in good order with no chips or cracks
  • The white soft-top is in good order and the powered mechanism is working well
  • The car is sat on Moon Chrome hubcaps, which match the car’s retro-futurist aesthetic
  • These are shod in Cooper Cobra tyres
  • The underside is reportedly solid
  • The vendor notes that the front suspension bushes have been replaced

The Mechanics

  • Powered by the 3.7L Slant-6 powerplant
  • This is Chrysler’s G-engine I6, which is inclined at a 30-degree angle
  • 3-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission with push-button shift
  • Engine bay is in good order with age-commensurate wear
  • The brakes have recently undergone a full service
  • The car has also been serviced with new oil and filters
  • By all accounts, the car is perfectly usable and ready to drive away

Summary

Beautifully styled, with a charming interior to match, the Dodge Dart is one of the most practical American classics for this side of the pond. Beautifully kept and ready to go, we’ve no doubt that this car will charm even the most jaded enthusiast.
