The Appeal
The emergence of high tech Japanese motorcycles from Honda is largely to thank for the introduction of the BSA B40. The B40 used an increased bore size to up engine capacity and compete with its new Japanese rivals.
Combining a wonderful selection of parts from some of the finest motorcycles from the BSA lineup of the era, BRU 538A has been moulded into a wonderful and incredibly stylish 350 Enduro Star replica. Fully UK registered since its arrival into the UK all of the key legwork with this build has been completed to an incredibly high standard leaving just small cosmetic tasks to be completed by a motivated new owner to finish up what is undeniably a very interesting and stylish classic BSA.
The History and Paperwork
- Originally a US bike, first registered in 1963 and dispatched to Oakland California
- The bike sat dormant and unused for many years in the US before being imported into the UK in late 2021
- Rebuilt by the current owner as a 350 Enduro Star Replica
- BSAOC (BSA Owners Club) certificates dating the bike and detailing its known history according to factory records
- Fully UK registered with BSAOC authentication
- DVLA confirmation of registration form
- Tax exempt due to the bike’s age and historic status
- V5 registration document present with the bike
- Injury means the vendor is now looking to move the bike on to someone who will complete the build
The Condition
- Smartly presented classic enduro bike that needs cosmetic finishing
- Built around a C15C competition frame
- Smaller enduro alloy fuel tank
- Tank has has minor dents professionally rectified and has then been undercoated ready for paint
- Simple good quality single black seat
- Glass and light lenses are clean and in fine form
- Single chrome exhaust in great order
- Simple control setup as akin to an enduro bike, with one singular gauge and minimal handle bar situated controls
- All understood to be in good working order
- Older Dunlop trials tyres on both the front and rear spoked wheels
- Bare metal chain guard and side plate for racing number
- Displayed in good overall form with a light and honest patina in places
The Mechanics
- Fitted with the rare and desirable SS90 engine, sourced from another US imported BSA
- Engine has been rebuilt as part of the build process undertaken on the bike along with the following
- Rebuilt crank
- Pistons
- Valves and guides
- 12v electrics with added lights
- Trails gearbox with lower trials gearing
- The vendor informs that a road gearing sprocket will be included with the bike along with some other spares and specialist BSA tools
- We are informed the bike starts comfortably and runs well with just minor oil leaks that are so typical of BSAs of the era
- Great overall mechanical order with engine and running gear presenting in good clean shape
Summary
A rebuilt SS90 engine, C15C framing, it's fair to say that the hard work on this bike has already been done, and to an exceptionally great standard. The cosmetic tasks that remain have already been prepped, and thus for the right individual this presents as a great simple project that will result in a truly special and rare classic British motorcycle that sings of a golden era of off road enduro motorbiking.
