The Appeal
For a car so long associated with traditional middle Britain, a world of doctors, solicitors and accountants, the Rover P4 began life as one of the country’s most innovative cars. The styling was informed across the Atlantic by Studebaker, but the clever engineering was all homegrown.
Over its long life Rover continued to develop the car to meet market needs. The 100 was so-named for its 100mph capabilities, performance that mixed with the sort of luxury interior that would have been familiar to members of post-war London’s private members’ clubs.
Not surprising, then, that these cars have a very loyal following. Or that a previous keeper of this one would drag it out of long-term, 30-year hibernation in a barn and thoroughly restore it to the lovely condition it now displays. Finished in fetching grey over blue with blue leather interior, it is great example with the lightest of characterful patina.
Beneath the big bonnet lies a rebuilt 2.6L engine, with the remaining running gear also overhauled during the restoration. Due to the multi-decade storage - it was laid up with just 15,000 miles on the clock - it has covered a mere 21,000 miles from new. 6,000 of those have been since the restoration. This is a marvellous example of a car that will immerse you in an evocative era of British motoring.
