The Appeal
Back in 1956 Renault launched the Dauphine, a small saloon that achieved instant success and sales of over 2 million over the years.
In the capable hands of Amédée Gordini or “Le Sourcie” on account of his incredible ability to extract performance from even the most diminutive of power plants, a sporting version of the Dauphine joined the Renault range. The Dauphine Gordini was taken racing to show off its performance and it did rather well, winning big events such as the Mille Miglia, The Monte Carlo Rally, and The Alpine Rally.
The Renault Dauphine Gordini is now really quite scarce and, when you come across one as good as this, it is not an opportunity to be missed.
The History and Paperwork
- Has lived in Spain all of its life
- Just 31,653 kilometres from new
- Never restored, just used carefully and judiciously maintained
- Journeys, services and repairs are all documented and dated by the original owner
The Interior
- Basic materials and layout - befitting of the economy car it was based upon
- Everything appears to be all original. and the fact that this car has not been taken to a concours level of perfection makes it feel more charismatic
- It has survived exceedingly well and has clearly been cherished
- The red seats and interior display a gentle hint of patina
- The headlining is well supported, has few marks and no damage we could see
- No cracking to the dashboard despite the warm climate in which the car has lived
- Rubber mats line the floor and the lack of a pronounced transmission tunnel lends a spacious feel in spite of the car’s small footprint
The Exterior
- The metallic bright blue suits the car perfectly and the car has been repainted at some point
- Its curvaceous ‘50s lines are accentuated by its side stripe, chrome trim and curved bumpers
- There are a few small imperfections around the edges of some panels but these do not detract from the car’s overall appearance
- The trim is a tad dull in places and has the smallest of imperfections which we think adds to the Dauphine’s charm
- The chromed grille over the engine hatch looks to be in great shape
- The underside appears in really good order with no evidence of corrosion visible to us
The Mechanics
- 850cc Gordini tuned engine
- Starts well, chirping and settling down to an eager yet steady idle
- Fantastic fun to drive as you can use all of the power in most traffic conditions
Summary
If it were ours, we would use this fabulous little car to compete in some classic rallies.
A very original car with a comprehensive history from new, that appears and looks to be in almost ‘time warp’ condition. It has been used very sparingly, lives in Spain with a dry climate and is a rare specimen.
