1962 Porsche 356B Super 90

The Appeal

Porsche has been behind some of the best sports cars of all time and the 356 is the model that set them on the path to success. Named in recognition of its 90 DIN horsepower, the 356B ‘Super 90’, was amongst the most advanced of the 356s, made shortly before its replacement, the 911 was introduced in 1964.
We’re delighted to offer this immensely smart and yet eminently usable example which has been subject to a great deal of recent mechanical and cosmetic attention. Its matching numbers, air-cooled boxer engine has been rebuilt, proving really reliable since. The sumptuous red leather interior has been retrimmed and all structural work to the floor pans and rocker panels has been attended to in the past. With older paintwork and chrome now accruing a very slight patina, this immensely good-looking Porsche is ready for its next custodian.

The History and Paperwork

  • Road registered in France
  • The vendor informs us that the engine is matching numbers
  • Numerous parts invoices from Rose Passion and other Porsche specialists
  • Accompanied by a number of photographs detailing previous repair and restoration work

The Interior

  • Red leather seats - recently reupholstered
  • Thick grey carpeting in very good condition
  • Period-correct Becker Avus radio
  • Lightly patinated original controls and switchgear
  • Smart headlining
  • Carpeted front luggage compartment complete with spare wheel
Having been retrimmed, this Porsche’s interior is in fine condition, with very little wear to any of the soft furnishings. The red leather complements the car’s grey exterior beautifully and is all in very nice order, with no damage apparent. The carpets are smart too, as are the door cards and headlining. All the chrome interior trims look great and the vendor demonstrates that the front seats fold and adjust exactly as they should.
We approve of how all the original controls, instruments and switchgear has been carefully preserved, ensuring a thoroughly period-correct driving experience. These all exhibit some gentle patina, commensurate with their age which means they feel just right to the touch. We understand all to be in good working order and the vendor does not report any issues.

The Exterior

  • Handsome grey paintwork applied approximately ten years ago
  • Pegasus motifs adorn the front wings
  • The bodywork is all in very good order
  • No corrosion or structural defects evident
  • Floors and rocker panels previously repaired and still in fine order
A 356 is magnificent to look at. Its basic silhouette formed the blueprint for pretty much every rear-engined Porsche that’s followed and seldom does such a pure piece of automotive design make it to production.
This 356B is utterly beautiful in grey with both its paint and brightwork having mellowed over time to create a subtly, yet attractive patina. The paint finish is now around ten years old and still looks wonderful, with very few imperfections. The bodywork is really straight and there’s no signs of corrosion anywhere to be seen. The photographic record accompanying the car shows much of the previous restoration and repair, all of which has held up really well which is testament to both the quality of the work and how well this car has been cared for. The vendor points out some very slight blistering at the front, although we find this is barely noticeable. The underside is all in very good order, with no issues apparent.

The Mechanics

  • 1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four
  • Twin carburettors
  • Electronic ignition
  • Rebuilt engine with a brand new crankshaft, bearings and piston sleeves
  • New wheel cylinders, master cylinder and brake shoes
  • The engine has reportedly been very reliable for the past 4-5 years since it was rebuilt
  • The vendor states that it is running very well

Summary

This fantastic Porsche 356 would be the perfect addition to any sports car collection. It’s in just the right condition to use and enjoy and is in an utterly brilliant colour combination. Running and driving very well, this is an opportunity you shouldn’t let pass you by.
