The Appeal
The long lived W111 series saw some of Mercedes-Benz’s most elegant designs and this restored 220 S ‘Fintail’ is a lovely example.
Imported from Australia, this remarkably solid car was the perfect candidate for restoration and, upon arrival, the Mercedes underwent a two and a half year rebuild which included a bare metal respray and thorough refurbishment of the interior.
The History and Paperwork
- Part of a large collection
- Imported from Australia
- Restored in recent years by a local specialist
- Registered in the vendor’s name
- V5C present
- MOT and road tax exempt
- Apparently matching numbers
The Interior
- Leather interior re-trimmed in original spec by specialist in Germany
- Light patination on certain fixtures and fittings
The vendor informs us that this Mercedes-Benz’s interior has been carefully restored, utilising as many of the original components as possible.
Interior fully refurbished and in excellent condition. The dashboard wears a light patina and features a period chrome Blaupunkt radio and the iconic Mercedes vertical instruments.
The carpeting, which has evidently been replaced at some point, appears in good order and the same goes for the headlining. There are a few marks to the boot carpet, although we think a thorough clean would remedy most of them.
The Exterior
- Repainted in blue
- Smart wheels shod with good tyres
- Very good chrome
On the outside, this 220 S presents very well and the blue bare metal respray has evidently been completed to a high standard.
The bodywork appears really straight and there are no blemishes we could see to the paintwork. Having spent most of its life in the dry Australian climate, the vendor tells us that no rust repair was required and we couldn’t see any either.
Chrome is used in abundance on this car and appears to be complete and in very good order with no pitting or damage we could see. The glass and light lenses look clear and without damage.
It sits upon a smart set of wheels and the vendor informs us that the tyres have ample tread remaining.
The Mechanics
- 2.2-litre 6-cylinder engine
- Automatic gearbox
- Starts, runs and drives well
We’re told by the owner that the car starts and runs well and is a pleasure to drive. They assure us that it accelerates through the gears smoothly and stops promptly.
Under the bonnet, everything appears complete and clean. The vendor remarks that it is really only a good detail away from being really smart indeed.
Summary
Presented in very fine condition this 220 S would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
Few are presented for sale in such good order and we’re sure the next owner shall really enjoy wafting about in this majestic Mercedes-Benz.
