Highlights
• Recently rebuilt engine
• Fantastic interior
• Looked after by a Porsche 356 specialist since its time in the UK
The appeal
A lightweight, nimble, rear engine, rear wheel drive two door package wrapped up in an undeniably beautiful skin, the Porsche 356 is a classic Porsche enthusiast’s dream car. Much like the Miura was Lamborghini’s first production car, the 356 was Porsche and what a way to start a brand. The 356 went into production in 1948 and carried on, through 4 iterations in both hard top and convertible form into 1965.
This 356 has spent the last 9 years in the current owner’s stewardship and has been in the UK since 2002 where it had a recondition from a previous UK owner. Over its life, this car has racked up more air miles than most people, being originally supplied to the USA, (there is unfortunately no record history for the car prior to an owner in New York in 1979), then going to Milan, then onto Monaco before settling on our shores in 2002.
It has had no expense spared by any of its owners and retains a high-quality finish with very little blemishes, it is described by the owner and shop that looks after it as a truly usable classic.
The history and paperwork
• Comprehensive service history post 1979 with import papers and photos of restoration
• One garage maintained so history from current owner is easy to source
First supplied to the USA, nothing is known about the car prior to the owner in 1979, the current owner is believed to be the 9th owner. The current owner has done some digging to get all the paperwork together for the car and there is a big stack of history documenting the car’s life so far, including photos of the restoration in Italy and the engine rebuild completed in 2016.
The car is MOT exempt. However the owner has decided to put a fresh MOT on the vehicle.
The Interior
• Re-chromed and re-trimmed seats
• Black leather trim grey carpet
• Immaculate condition throughout
The interior is one of the highlights of this car, the black leather trim and grey carpet make this Porsche a wonderful place to be. The seats have been returned to original standard spec as there were a pair of 911 items fitted when the current owner bought the vehicle.
The dashboard is in great condition with the wood rim, ‘Les Leston’ steering wheel taking the limelight as the star of the show in the cabin, it is simply beautiful to behold and really finishes the entire car off nicely. The dials are all the same colour scheme of black with green numbering, giving the dashboard a 90’s touch with the retro colour scheme.
The front storage space is equally as clean and houses the fuel tank, spare wheel and battery with some rubber matting for you to place a weekend holdall with any luggage you wish to bring with you. All electrics are reported to be working in the car, including the radio.
The Exterior
• Straight bodywork with a few minor scuffs
• Resprayed and restored during time with the 4th owner in 1991
• Chassis mileage is displayed as 11,991
As you can see from the photos, the exterior of this Porsche is very respectable and whilst the paint is old and does have some age-related marks (all shown in the photo gallery) it still looks fantastic in photos and in the metal.
The wheels are in great condition with plenty of tread left in the tyres. The chrome on the wheels is great and really sets off the exterior nicely against the silver paintwork. Equally the chrome trim on the exterior of the car is in good condition too, with only the front bonnet emblem showing the slightest signs of pitting.
Underneath the car is rust proofed with stone chip paintwork, the panels on the underside are free from any visible damage and rust. The only part that has any surface rust is the exhaust, however the engine looks clean and there were no puddles underneath the car when we moved it for the photoshoot.
The Mechanics
• Engine rebuild in 2016 with receipts from PR Services
• Very little miles covered during the last 9 years due to only being driven weekends
• Regularly maintained and serviced by PR Services
The car had just passed its MOT on the day of the photoshoot and the engine was running sweetly. The car fired up and drove with no issues, the newly rebuilt and fitted engine was working well with a fantastic soundtrack.
As you can see from the photos, the engine is very clean and is kept in fantastic condition by the shop that rebuilt it a few years ago. The engine rebuild was performed after a catastrophic failure of the previous unit, this dictated new or recondition parts where necessary giving the new powerplant a much better chance of surviving for a long time.
The owner reports that since the car has not been driven much since the rebuild, the unit remains on very low miles and is ready to simply jump in and enjoy.
Summary
An iconic Porsche with a stunning exterior profile, this one is in a strong colour with a multicultural history documentation, all the hard work has been completed with regards to the mechanics on this 356 and aside from a few paint blemishes, it is in fantastic condition.
The owner and shop that look after this car assure us that it’s a ready to use, beautifully presented classic that turns heads and brings joy in huge measure. A great car presented with a clear history of the utmost care and financial backing, surely a worthwhile investment or opportunity to indulge that lifelong 356 enthusiast itch.
