BACKGROUND
The PA Cresta produced by Vauxhall from 1957-1962 took its styling cues from the 1957 Buick Special and brought tailfins, wrap around windows, liberal use of chrome and white wall tyres to the UK.
There the similarity ends with this PA Cresta being carefully restored and converted using a 2004 Vauxhall Monaro as a donor vehicle to provide an incredibly unique and individual car. Using all the running gear and electrics from the famous Monaro this Cresta has been transformed into a very special car indeed.
HISTORY
The current owner took on this project as a labour of love with the intension of bringing all the high-performance attributes and driver safety and convenience features from the Monaro (perhaps better known as the General Motors HOLDEN V8 muscle car built in Australia) and wrapping it in the distinctly seductive curves and look of the PA Cresta.
Finished in 2014 after a 2 year build the overall result is nothing short of stunning. Fitted with a 5.7 up rated V8 this beauty develops a very useful 360 bhp which, when matched with the six-speed manual gearbox and fuel injection, provides plenty of power giving a superb driving experience.
The Monaro brings a whole lot of exciting features and benefits that weren’t even thought about in the 60’s. The spec is impressive and includes all round uprated EPS disc brakes with ABS, limited slip rear axle with Harrop diff cover, traction control, uprated aluminium radiator, power steering and a seductively sounding stainless steel exhaust system.
Since completion, the car has covered around 12,000 trouble free and very enjoyable miles.
PAPERWORK
There is plenty of supporting documentation covering various works carried out and paperwork for the PA Cresta and the donor car.
Also included is a book or ‘diary of the build’ showing the various stages and fine detail of this project
INTERIOR
The modern interior is well presented and finished to a very high standard in full black leather using the dashboard and interior from the Monaro, providing the fortunate occupants with air-conditioning, electric window and seats, cruise control, remote central locking, a powerful Pioneer audio system with Bluetooth phone and music streaming connectivity, audio steering wheel controls, rear view camera and all the usual modern motoring creature comforts.
EXTERIOR
All the external body panels, except for the roof, were pretty much designed and fabricated from scratch to suit the retro PA Cresta look featuring the 2-door customisation, flared wheel arches and uniquely designed bonnet which complete the stunning on-road presence you can see in all the photos. Finished in Vauxhall Glory red paintwork and gleaming chrome work it paints a very pretty picture indeed.
The hand-built bonnet is lockable, and a third brake light has also been fitted in the rear window. Brand new laminated windscreen and windows have also been sourced and fitted all round.
MECHANICS
The Monaro donor car came with a rebuilt engine designed to cope with a supercharger and around 600bhp. As such all the internals were balanced and forged pistons and con-rods replaced the standard items. The integrity and rigidity of the chassis has also been enhanced with roll bars front and rear. Approximately 12,000 miles have been covered since the engine re-build.
Everything works and sounds as it should, especially that 5.7 litre V8, and the current owner has no reason to report any running issues at all, another benefit over an original PA Cresta!
THE APPEAL
Probably not a car for the shy retiring type but, if you’re looking for that classic retro look with modern day driver convenience, performance, comfort and safety then this car ticks all those boxes, providing incredible road presence and interest wherever she goes. One thing is for sure, you are unlikely to run into another one like this anytime soon.
