1961 Maico Scrambler 250

Highlights

  • Registered as an historic vehicle - qualifying it for road tax and MOT exemption
  • Rare and capable classic scrambler
  • Exhibits a rich patina, making it very usable

The Appeal

Lauded in period for performance far exceeding the usual confines of modest 250 cc capacity, the Maico 250 Scrambler showcased German engineering at its best - extracting so much from such a small two-stroke single. These compact machines are therefore sought-after off-road bikes and the scarcity is such that you can’t afford to pass up the opportunity when one is offered for sale.
We’re delighted to report that this 1961 example is now seeking a new home. It’s in very original, usable condition, with a rich patina and an engine that reportedly runs very well indeed. Registered as an historic vehicle and thus qualifying for MOT exemption, this bike is ready to enjoy, so be sure to make it your next classic motorcycle purchase.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5C present
  • Correspondence with the DVLA and associated paperwork accurately dating the bike qualified it for historic registration which has subsequently been completed
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing

The Condition

  • Handsome period appropriate red and blue paint scheme
  • The paint is in good overall order, with some age related wear which we feel rather suits it
  • Chrome finished mud guards both in very good order with some light patina
  • Light patina to the spoked wheels which are otherwise in really fine order for their age
  • Equipped with aggressive off-road tyres
  • Traditional painted on registration
  • Smart Maico badges on the fuel tank
  • Despite being a scrambler, there are no bid dents in the tank, or mudguards
  • The frame appears straight and corrosion-free
  • The seat upholstery remains in fantastic condition
  • No integrated stand
  • Complete with a number board on the handlebars in order to display a racing number
  • The grips and foot pegs are only lightly worn
  • No instruments, as befits this sort of bike

The Mechanics

  • 250 cc two-stroke single cylinder engine
  • Unit construction
  • Painted black, the exhaust appears in good order and is complete with heat guard
  • The engine cases present well
  • We understand the bike to be in good mechanical order

Summary

Every motorcycle collection should feature at least one classic scrambler and this rare, capable Maico 250 would be a great candidate to occupy that corner of your shed. Historic road registered, this versatile machine is well worth your consideration.
