The Appeal
If one car embodies Italian style above all others, the Giulietta Spider is a strong contender. Based upon the accomplished 101 Series platform and boasting svelte Pininfarina bodywork, the Giulietta Spider proved an instant hit, soon becoming a totemic symbol of “La Dolce Vita”.
Here we have a highly original 1961 example that’s been restored to its original specifications. The work was carried out to a great standard in 2014 - to exact ASI regulations stipulating a car has to be within 99 per cent of its factory specifications. The vendor reports that it continues to run really well, benefitting from regular servicing. The Spider now resides in the UK although it retains its Italian registration and ASI membership.

- The controls looks smart and feel great in operation, providing a glorious interface through which to engage with the Alfa’s fantastic handling
- All looks immense smart underneath, with no obvious signs of corrosion
This Alfa looks utterly gorgeous and the Giulietta Spider still stands as one of the most beautiful convertibles ever made. Following an older restoration, this example has now in beautifully, with a light, even patina developing inside and out.
Having been stored inside and refraining from venturing out in inclement weather has paid dividends during its life in the UK, so the bodywork and underside appear free from any of the corrosion that unfortunately haunts many an Italian car of this vintage. All is in fantastic order, including the roof and we understand that everything works exactly as it should.
The Mechanics
- 1,300 cc Nord four-cylinder twin-cam
- Single carburettor
- Four-speed manual gearbox
- All looks just as it should under the bonnet, in accordance with Alfa Romeo factory specifications
- The vendor reports that it runs smoothly and drives impeccably, thanks to regular maintenance
The Summary
The highlight of every Alfa is to be discovered when you get behind the wheel on your favourite ribbon of tarmac. The lightweight 101 Giulietta was highly successful in period competition - including the Spider variant, and it’s not difficult to see why once you’ve taken one for a spirited drive. It goes without saying that the all-alloy Nord twin-cam is a gem of an engine, and in peppy 1.3-litre form, it thrives on revs, encouraging you to make good use of the gearbox.
We understand that this example is exercised regularly and maintained properly so runs exactly as it should. The vendor reports that it is great fun to drive, especially on country roads.
