1960 MG MGA 1600 Coupe

Highlights

  • Previously restored, from bare-metal
  • Very well maintained, with vast history and invoices
  • Fitted with a Ford Type 9 5-speed transmission
  • Low mileage example, with MOT history to support
  • Treasured by the current keeper since 1975

The Appeal

Produced from 1955 to 1962, the MGA lead the way for MG, launching the next generation of radical new vehicles. Throughout the production run, the MGA would be offered in a combination of configurations, across both roadster, and coupe forms.

Presented today, is a stunning example of the 1600 coupe variant, arguably one of the most handsome classics money can buy. Believed to originally hail from Worcester as suggested by the “WP” registration, this is indeed an original British RHD example and quite a rare one at that.

The current keeper has treasured the vehicle since 1975, ensuring this MG receives everything it has needed over the years, including a bare-metal restoration. The restoration was completed in 2000 and utilized a vast array of high-quality parts from the likes of Bob West, and the MG Owner’s Club.

Now, the vehicle presents a superb opportunity for those looking to experience one of the most desirable British classics on the market. It’s a car that reflects a great deal of care over the years, and will no doubt continue to turn heads wherever it may venture in the future.

The History and Paperwork

  • Just 43,259 miles displayed, supported by the included previous MOT certificates (The vendor does inform us that it could have gone around the clock once)
  • MOT until 1 September 2023
  • 0 former keepers are noted on the current V5C document, although a continuation original registration document is included
  • Owned and cherished by the current keeper since 1975
  • Fantastic maintenance history, with plenty of invoices & paperwork present
  • Subject to a bare-metal restoration in 2000, resprayed in the original Iris Blue specified on the included heritage certificate
  • Garage stored following the vehicle’s restoration, and used only in dry Summer conditions since
  • Previously ventured to the Le Mans Classic in 2010, performing admirably with no issues despite a heatwave at the time
  • Includes an original handbook, and workshop manual
  • More than ready to be enjoyed by the next lucky owner

The Interior

  • Retrimmed black leather seats, with new foam seat bases and blue piping
  • Features grey carpeting throughout, with MG rubber floor mats atop
  • Fitted with non-inertia seat belts
  • Fitted with an ammeter in place of the factory screen wash button
  • Features the factory fitted original type steering wheel
  • Includes an unused spare, tools & jack within the boot. As there is no carpeting, the boot does show light surface blemishes, but hardly anything of notable concern
  • The interior of this MGA reflects plenty of care, and now seemingly shows only light signs of use and age, including slight wear to the driver’s seat, light marking to the carpeting, and minor blemishes throughout. With a thorough dash of TLC, it seems likely a great deal of these minor blemishes can be alleviated without much hassle

The Exterior

  • Resprayed in the original factory colour; Iris Blue, as part of a bare-metal restoration completed in 2000
  • Fitted with 15” steel disc wheels, complete with hub caps. The wheels present themselves brilliantly and come wrapped in Firestone F560 tyres, with plenty of tread left to enjoy
  • Features a Triplex front windscreen, and flexible chrome-coloured Mylar screen seal trims
  • Most of the external brightwork has been re-chromed and looks fantastic today
  • The vehicle’s underside was also treated during the restoration process and sports a coating of Waxoyl
  • Overall, this sleek coupe presents itself very well for its age and stands out from the crowds with its beautiful Iris Blue exterior. There are of course minor signs of age to expect, including the pictured blemishes, a few very minor dents, slight damage to a rear sill finisher, and areas showing previous touchup work. That said, a great deal of these are only noticeable upon close inspection, and hardly detract from the overall form of this beautiful machine

The Mechanics

  • Well-maintained example, with an impressive selection of paperwork detailing plenty of servicing, and replacement components from the likes of Bob West and the MG Owners Club
  • Serviced by the current keeper, with the occasional input from York MG
  • Serviced, fitted with a new head gasket, and given a wheel alignment last year
  • MOT until 1 September 2023
  • The 1600cc unleaded engine performs very well and holds good oil pressure
  • Fitted with a 5-speed Hi-Gear conversion for better gearing, and subsequently; a quieter and cooler drive. The original gearbox is also included in the sale
  • The vehicle & drives brilliantly, although the current owner notes the Ford Type 9 gearbox is notchy when changing from 1st to 2nd gear when cold. However, a different viscosity oil may alleviate this considerably.
  • Features an uprated radiator and bypass fan, which blows toward the SU carburetors
  • Fitted with an electronic SU fuel pump, and an oil cooler
  • Converted to a single 12V battery
  • Fitted with a stainless steel exhaust, which emits a lovely note across the revs
  • Equipped with Lucas H4 headlights, and a single Lucas fog light, fitted with an LED bulb
  • Although yet to be used, the starting handle is also included with the vehicle
  • Overall, the vehicle performs brilliantly and reflects years of care & maintenance. In fact, the only known issues as mentioned by the current keeper are an occasionally temperamental tachometer, the aforementioned notchy 1-2 gears when cold, and the speedometer, which needs recalibrating to suit the new 5-speed. Otherwise, this beautiful MGA performs like an absolute champion, and will no doubt provide many happy miles for its next lucky owner

Summary

Offered today is a fantastic example of the desirable MGA coupe, complete with an excellent maintenance record, plenty of paperwork, and restoration work under its belt. In fantastic working order with evident signs of care across the board, this MG would make an excellent addition to any collection, particularly in time for the upcoming summer.
