Pre-bids

1960 Land Rover Series II

Highlights

  • Recommissioned in 2017 following a 34 year period in hibernation
  • New canvas rear tilt fitted in recent years
  • Desirable short-wheelbase truck cab variant

The Appeal

Land Rovers are amongst the hardiest vehicles ever made and, even if they’ve spent a time out of commission, a little work can soon bring them back to their best. This Series II lay dormant from 1983 until 2017 when it was returned to the road by the current owner.
Presented in good condition with the usual battle scars commensurate with the rigours of a hardworking life, this Series II looks great and is very usable.

The History and Paperwork

  • It appears the DVLA made an error recording this car’s VIN incorrectly by one digit as ‘141600152’, when it is in fact ‘141000152’
  • The correct VIN suggests this to be from 1960, denoted by the fourth digit ‘0’
  • The DVLA have recorded this car’s registration date as 14th September 1957 which is seven months before the Series II was released
  • V5C present and displaying the two aforementioned apparent errors
  • MOT valid until January 2024
  • An invoice dated June 2019 details sourcing a replacement engine along with some work to the brakes and electrics
  • A further invoice from August 2019 details the remaining work and amounts to £4,521.84
  • The invoice for the January 2023 MOT test is also available and includes a couple of other service parts
  • Current MOT test certificate present

The Interior

  • Three-abreast ‘deluxe’ vinyl front seating
  • Protective rubber overmats fitted
  • Spartan and utilitarian, with no headlining
  • Besides a few small splits and some general signs of use, the seats continue to present well
  • Some corrosion evident to the inside of the door tops
  • The inside of the bulkhead has been hand painted in black
  • The dashboard panel appears in reasonable condition with a couple of additional switches
  • Pleasingly patinated steel dashboard, pedals and also some gentle wear to the controls
  • Under the canvas tilt, the rear load area presents well and is lined with ribbed rubber matting

The Exterior

  • Smart green paintwork
  • Attractive and desirable truck cab configuration
  • We’re informed that a new canvas tilt was fitted during the recommissioning process
  • Bears a few dents and scratches commensurate with age
  • The galvanised cappings have been painted over in body colour except the bumper which remains as it would have been originally
  • No sill covers fitted at present
  • Now fitted with aftermarket wheels, shod with brand new BF Goodrich All Terrain tyres
  • The wheels are pinstriped and in very nice condition
  • The vendor tells us that the chassis and bulkhead were very sound and have not required any work in recent years
  • Underneath, it looks to be in good order with the usual mud and light surface corrosion evident in places
  • The rear crossmember appears sound, with no obvious signs of repairs
  • Fitted with an adjustable tow bar

The Mechanics

  • 2.25-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which was replaced in recent years
  • Equipped with freewheeling front hubs
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Selectable low range and four-wheel drive
  • The engine, braking and electrical systems have recently been subject to some professional work
  • The vendor informs us that it runs and drives well and they apparently have no faults to report

Summary

This is a smart Series II that has received a great deal of attention in recent years. If you’re looking for a really usable example, this would be a great Land Rover to consider.
