1960 Land Rover Series II

Highlights

  • Very original with faded paint as a Land Rover should be
  • New canvas tilt
  • Engine fires easily

The Background

Restyled 1958 by the legendary David Bache - designed of the Ranger Rover as well as P6 and SD1, it looked a little less utilitarian and more stylish than before, while under the skin the engines gained more power.

With its strong and adaptable platform, low ratio four wheel drive and power take offs there was almost no job the Land Rover didn't take on, from jungle explorer or police patrol to farm machinery or mobile cinema, ambulance or AA patrol, the Land Rover was and is one of the most capable vehicles ever built.

The History and Paperwork

Sadly the paperwork for this Land Rover is missing as it was taken in part exchange and while passing from dealer to dealer it appears to have been lost.
However, it clearly has been very well looked after and there are some boxes of parts and part packaging as well as a well thumbed workshop manual and a new folding side seat for the rear and the hand start crank handle is there should you want to give that a try!

The Interior

One of the most basic and simple interiors made, there isn’t much to wear out or break inside a Series 2. The doors have no door card, just the plain painted metal of the outer skin, no door pull -  just use the door frame - and a simple door handle attached to the lock.

There were no carpets, just a painted metal floor which has some scrapes, and the pedals are chunky and work boot friendly. The dash is basic with central instruments and opening air vents in the scuttle, and the wipers run from separate motors attached to the folding windscreen frame. The original ignition switch no longer functions and a new switch is tucked away on the lower dash.

The three seat front bench has new vinyl cushions, behind it a bar has been added to attach new inertia reel seat belts. In the back there is a rubber floor mat in the centre and side bench seats either side making this a seven seater!

There is a recent looking folding vinyl seat on the passenger side and a new one still in the box for the drivers side.

The Exterior

The paint looks original and shows its 60 years in the sort of authentic patina money can’t buy, with flat and faded paint which is exactly how you want a classic Land Rover -  shiny ones just look wrong, these are working cars!

The near side door panel has a small dings, but other than that all panels appear to be dent and ding free. There is a spot of bubbling on the drivers door bottom. The top is a canvas tilt which is very new and in perfect condition, it transforms the look and feel of the car and keeps it water tight inside. The steel wheels are white painted and have good tyres, matching across the axles, and there is a spare wheel mount on the bonnet.

The Mechanics

The diesel engine springs into life easily every time and the four speed gearbox worked well while manoeuvring for photos. It has the low and high range gears and locking differentials making it an unstoppable off road machine. We haven't tested these functions but believe they work as they should.

The Appeal

There is something incredibly appealing about a Series Land Rover. Incredibly basic but intensely capable. The styling is simple but pure and the original paint gives it a the feel of authentic wear, while the new canvas makes it smart and comfortable.
This is a great looking and nice running example with no rust we can see, making it a very desirable car.
