The Appeal

The Lambretta scooter is a long surviving icon of the 1950s/60s, some may know it from the days of the Mods and Rockers, and some may know it more as a quirky classic scooter. Wherever you may know Lambretta from you have probably already fallen in love with this example.
It has recently been through a very extensive restoration that has left it in better condition than when it left the factory in. You will now get to benefit from the current owner’s hard work and wherever you wish to you it, you will always have a smile on your face and an admiring look or two from passers-by.

The History and Paperwork

  • It is believed that this bike started its life out somewhere in the West Country
  • It was certainly in this area when the current owner picked it up from Weston-Super-Mare
  • They were going to use the bike as it was, but on closer inspection, it needed a lot of work, it was placed in the shed for a rainy day
  • Upon the resurgence of UK endurance racing was the rainy day, and work started
  • The bike was completely stripped back and quality parts from AF Rayspeed, MB developments, BGM, Scootopia, and Casa Lambretta were used during the rebuild
  • The parts fitted to conform to both UK Endurance Racing regulations and the BSSO road race class
  • During the build, the frame was straightened on a jig, it then has the engine mount reinforced, it was also relieved slightly to allow the fitting of the larger RB 20 reed valve block
  • A replacement rear brake pivot pin was also fitted
  • The front mudguard and forks were replaced with the sleeker Eibar examples, and custom-made shorter rear running boards were also fitted to the scooter
  • After blasting, the frame went to the paint booth where it was etch primed and painted in 2 pack red. The forks, hubs, and running gear were sprayed in satin and gloss black
  • You won’t be surprised to hear the engine also received a lot of work during the restoration
  • It was completely stripped, vapour blasted, and rebuilt using new bearings, seals, gaskets, o rings, and circlips
  • Along with new bearings and seals, the engine also received some of the parts below
  • An Arthur Francis (AF) Rayspeed RB20 (200 cc) top-end kit, 30 mm PHBH Dellorto carburettor, AF Rayspeed road race expansion exhaust system, AF Rayspeed road race cassette type clutch, MBD nylon chain guide, 58mm x 116mm race crank, Static Electronic ignition, with a midweight flywheel, cable adjuster block, gear swivel & tie bar, kickstart shaft, cylinder cowling, and flywheel cowling to name a few
  • It didn’t just stop with the engine rebuild, other new parts fitted to this bike include
  • A wiring loom, fuel tank, Sebac rear shock absorber, choke lever, MBD rear hub locking kit, rear brake shoes, Mita's racing (soft compound) tyres, steering lock, kill switch, Ancillotti slope back seat, Ducati CDI & regulator, and all grey rubber trim
  • As you can tell by now, it has been extensively rebuilt
  • One rare feature that was kept is the Innocenti Series 2 Speedo blanking plate
  • Upon completion the current owner entered it into a 6 hour endurance race, it performed impeccably as they climbed through the race order
  • This scooter has also been featured in the magazine for the Lambretta Club of Great Britain, issue number 234 if you want to find it
  • It is now your chance to add to this bike's amazing history, don’t miss out on this rare scooter

The Condition

  • Amazing looking bike
  • The paint in is great condition
  • The black and red combination is eye catching
  • Practically like new
  • It will look great on the road or track
  • Rare speedo blanking plate
You may have been able to deduce from the previous section that the restoration of this bike was from the ground up. It is thanks to this time and effort from the current owner that this bike now sits in amazing condition ready for you to jump on and blast down the road.

This pocket sized scooter is presented very well indeed, if we start by looking at the striking red paint, we can see that it is in lovely condition. This paintwork was completed by Classic Car Restorations in Kings Lynn, some photos show the scooter being painted within the gallery. The current owner has said that as it has just competed in a 6 hour race, you may be able to find some blemishes on the front, but this just adds to the bike's amazing story.

The red paint is then complemented extremely well by the combination of gloss and satin black ancillary parts like the engine and wheel hubs. The great condition is mirrored by the Anchollti slope back seat, which looks rather comfortable for whatever you wish to do with this scooter. Looking down the grippy section of the footboard looks like new so your feet should remain planted when you’re pressing on. The area at the front that holds the handlebars, leavers, and headlight are also in amazing condition. If you wish to get straight on this bike and head out on track, then this should be possible.

It is still wearing its scrutineering pass sticker on the front leg shield, and it also still has a practice day handlebar tag in place. There is no doubt that this bike is in great condition overall, all of the important elements of the exterior look like they have just come out of the factory, and as such you will be getting a wonderful looking classic and iconic scooter.

The Mechanics

  • Total engine rebuild
  • UK road registered
  • Rayspeed RB20 (200cc) top-end kit
  • Lots of race compliant parts
  • Never missed a beat during its recent race
  • A pure joy to ride
Much like the overall condition of the scooter, the mechanical elements of this Lambretta are in nearly new condition too. You are effectively getting a 1960 bike, that has been enhanced thanks to 60 years of innovation within the Lambretta modification industry. We have already listed quite a few of the new parts that have been fitted to this Lambretta in the ‘History and Paperwork’ section. There were a few other parts fitted however that haven’t been mentioned. The front forks have received a big overhaul, they were stripped and rebuilt with new springs, rubbers, and fork link bushes.

Whilst there the current owner also fitted a brand new Nissin anti-dive hydraulic outboard front disc hub. To top off the front end a set of fully adjustable (damping and rebound) BGM front shock absorbers have been fitted as well.  It is important to note that the Rayspeed RB20 top end has just been fitted and as such will need running in properly, as per the instructions, before you go hell for leather.
Not every part was replaced in favour of new parts. The original Li 150 gearbox has been retained, these are known for their reliability, and it performed flawlessly during its race. It also has a reinforced Eibar winter model Series 2 chain case.  The current owner has said that it is basically a brand new, road going, Lambretta with all the proper performance upgrades. Thanks to these it now handles brilliantly, accelerates like a proper 2 stroke and stops like you wouldn’t believe. You are going to get an excellent little scooter to ride that’s for sure.

Summary

What an incredible scooter this is, with all of the time and effort put into the restoration you will be getting an amazing road ready scooter. It also has the added benefit of being eligible for classic Lambretta racing, so what’s not to love? You will be getting a scooter that is ready for just about anything you can throw at it. Wherever you take it, you will remember the trip for the rest of your life. This is truly one of a kind.
