Highlights
- A second-generation Ford Thunderbird fitted with the 7L MEL V8 power unit
- A well-presented example in a highly original looking condition
- Complete with a wealth of charming period details and accessories
The Appeal
The original, two-seater Ford Thunderbird was deemed a success by any meaningful measure. Despite this, some powerful Ford executives were concerned that its two-seater configuration would limit its ultimate potential. As a result, the second generation, launched in 1958, was a bigger car altogether allowing for generous four-seat accommodation. It was a shrewd decision as the four-seater went on to sell four times as many units as its predecessor.
This example hails from the last year of production of the second-generation car and benefits from the fitment of the bigger 7L, 350bhp V8 engine. This example looks to be in a fine overall condition, offering stacks of interesting period details. This big slice of automotive real estate should prove an exciting opportunity for 1960’s car and American culture lovers.

Summary
The Ford Thunderbird was truly a successful endeavour for Ford. It went on to be a model that was produced right up to 2005 across no less than 11 generations. The early cars, especially the gargantuan second series, provide a fascinating counterpoint to today’s “less is more” design ethos. These are cars that are almost guaranteed to turn heads and initiate conversations in equal measure.
This example offers a charming level of originality and is awash with period American Classic details. The overall condition appears very sound with just some minor imperfections easily attended to if required. If you want to relive the heydays of American automotive prowess, then this is a perfect car to do it in.
