The Appeal

Car's like this Giulietta Sprint are the reason we Alfisti come over all dewy-eyed and weak at the knees. Just look at it. Everything about this car is nothing short of exquisite; from its curvaceous Bertone bodywork, effortlessly elegant interior and the eager little Nord twin-cam under the bonnet. If you're feeling at all disillusioned by modern motoring, this Alfa is the antidote. Spend any time behind that delicate Nardi steering wheel, and you're sure to rediscover the joys of driving.

The vendor believes that this could be the best and most original Sprint in the UK, and we're inclined to agree. As the photographs attest, it's beautifully presented inside and out and is about as original as you could possibly imagine - no mean feat when you consider this car is now sixty-five years old.

The vendor tells us:

"This Alfa was originally delivered to celebrated Swedish aquanaut Per Edvin Falting who raised the warship Vasa (built 1627) from the floor of Stockholm harbour. It was subsequently to spend between 20 and 30 years in heated storage in Sweden and was discovered, recommissioned and restored by Ola Söderpalm, a senior member of the Swedish Alfa club.

"The undamaged and uncorroded body was treated to a bare metal respray in original Gardenia White. The mechanicals were renovated and rebuilt using as many original parts as possible. It was known in Sweden and Denmark as 'Ola’s car' and was driven by Ola from to Stockholm to Milan for the 50th Giulietta celebration. It has been driven and dry stored by my family in the UK since 2016. During that time it was cared for by Carrs Ferrari Exeter’s senior technician. The car is Alfa Storico certified."

That's quite the story. These sporting coupés were often owned by interesting individuals in period, attracting adventurous types like pioneer diver Falting and Tintin's creator Hergé, who also sported a white Giulietta Sprint during the 1950s.

Accompanied by a wealth of paperwork which makes for fascinating reading, this Giulietta Sprint is fit to grace any collection and would certainly be welcomed by the thriving Alfa Romeo community throughout the UK and Europe. Voluntarily MOT tested, resulting in a clean first-time pass, this glorious little car is ready to enjoy.

The Sprint's irrefutable beauty is perhaps best explained by how simple and unpretentious its lines are. This is no flash Ferrari, but it's easily as elegant as anything to ever wear Enzo's prancing horse. This car exemplifies this no-nonsense design language by being finished in white - a neutral hue that really shows off the soft Bertone curves at their best.

As you'll have observed from the photographs, this car is beautifully presented throughout and the vendor has clearly invested a great deal of time and thought into the smallest of details, which makes all the difference. Particularly fine features include the period Nardi steering wheel and the period spare tyre - complete with the original sticker!

The Mechanics

  • 1.3-litre Nord all-alloy four-cylinder twin cam
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Engine and gearbox are period correct and unmodified, except for an electric cooling fan
  • Mechanical components renovated and rebuilt using as many original parts as possible
  • Runs well in all conditions, preferring a little choke when cold starting like all Tipo 101 Alfas
There's nobody better placed to note how this Sprint drives than the vendor who hass owned it since 2016. Here's their summary:

"The car is delight to drive. The steering is light and responsive. It is not fast by modern standards but, with proper use of the smooth shifting gear box, it makes eager progress on B roads. For a 1300cc 1960s car it cruises well on motorways at the legal limit, making longer journeys to events and shows relaxing."
