The Appeal
Prolific American importer of European sports cars Max Hoffman proved so successful in his endeavours that manufacturers would listen to his suggestions when it came to devising new models. Hoffman was instrumental in the advent of the 300 SL ‘Gullwing’, 356 ‘Speedster’ and of course, the Pininfarina Spider variant of the beloved Alfa Romeo Giulietta.
Weighing in at a mere 860 kilograms and powered by Giuseppi Busso’s legendary Nord twin-cam, the Giulietta Spider was revered for its dynamic handling. Pininfarina’s styling made it the quintessential Italian roadster and they remain eminently desirable to this day.

Based on the Bertone-bodied Sprint, the Giulietta Spider features Pininfarina’s trademark curves in abundance and has become a symbol of Italy’s ‘Dolce Vita’. An updated version was unveiled at the 1959 Frankfurt Motor Show, with recessed headlights, a revised nose and grill design, and a redesigned dashboard.
Having undergone an extensive restoration, this 1960 example looks to be in marvellous condition, with barely any wear to speak of besides the most superficial of paint defects. The roof too is in really good order and reportedly operates correctly.
On the inside, the upholstery and floor matting are all in really smart order. A particular highlight is the delicacy of the instruments and controls, all of which provide a fabulous interface to engage with this car’s spry handling.
