1959 Land Rover Series II 88"

Highlights

  • Beautifully patinated and remarkably straight bodywork
  • Accompanied by a substantial history file
  • Fitted with a canvas tilt which is in very good condition

The Appeal

The Series II represents a sweet spot in Land Rover lineage, retaining much of its predecessor’s character while also boasting a number of technical improvements.
This delightful 1959 example looks to be exceedingly original and in a great state of preservation. We love highly restored show cars with gleaming paint and spotless interiors, but equally, it's fabulous to see cars that wear their age with pride.
As working vehicles, Land Rover are ideally suited to this aesthetic and this Series II exhibits some very attractive patina.

The History and Paperwork

  • There is a box file containing a collection of invoices and ownership documents
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • The odometer indicates 29,878 miles which we’re unable to confirm as genuine
  • Work and servicing during the vendor’s ownership has been entrusted to a local garage
  • We’re informed that the car is inspected and serviced annually

The Interior

  • Three-abreast black vinyl seating in the front with an additional longitudinal bench seat in the rear
  • Besides a little damage to the central front seat base and a few small marks elsewhere, the upholstery is in really fine condition
  • Retains its period-correct heavy duty linked rubber floor mats
  • The steel dashboard and footwells appear really sound
  • Like the exterior, the interior paintwork is patinated with a fair few scuffs and wear marks
  • We’re informed that the vent flaps operate smoothly and seal correctly
  • The door seals look to have seen better days as they’re heavily perished with sections missing
  • The inside of the door tops, especially the driver’s side, show signs of corrosion but replacements are readily available and fairly simple to install
  • Fitted with the distinctive Smiths round cabin heater
  • The instruments show their age but we understand they’re in good working order
  • Retains its correct ‘plunger’ style check straps
  • No aftermarket equipment or switchgear so far as we could see

The Exterior

  • Patinated Bronze Green paintwork bears multiple small scars, including some crazing in places
  • Besides a smattering of light dents in the soft ‘Birmabright’ bodywork, this car is remarkably straight for a Land Rover of this vintage
  • All the original rivets and spot welds remain clearly visible down the sides
  • Fitted with a canvas tilt which looks to be in really good shape
  • Underneath, the chassis displays some surface corrosion in places but we’re informed there is no structural corrosion present
  • The bulkhead appears really sound, as does the rear crossmember
  • The steel wheels look to have been painted fairly recently and are in nice condition
  • Equipped with a radiator grille muff for colder weather
  • The rear mud flaps match the patination of the remainder of the vehicle
  • All of the galvanised parts look to be in nice shape
  • The vendor preserves the paint finish by wiping the car down with penetrating oil after washing

The Mechanics

  • Equipped with overdrive and freewheeling hubs
  • 2.25-litre petrol engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox which was reportedly replaced in 2012
  • Under the bonnet, all appears in really good order
  • Windscreen washers have been added to the bonnet at some point
  • We’re informed that it starts well and drives as it should

Summary

This is a particularly fine example of the coveted Series II Land Rover and we’re sure it will find favour amongst enthusiasts and collectors alike.
