1959 Land Rover Series II 2.0L Diesel

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Rare Series 2 4x4 with 2.0L Diesel engine
  • Only three owners from new
  • Highly original throughout
  • Pumps and injectors refurbished around seven years ago

The Appeal

Perhaps one of the most iconic cars in the world, the Land Rover is the definition of British motoring at its best. Utilitarian off-roaders that were built with farmland in mind, you’d be hard-pressed to find a rural area without one of these all-purpose classics roaming. They still raise a smile, and - crucially - just keep on going, come rain or shine.
This highly original, early Series II example is a prime case. Having only had three owners from new, this remarkable 4x4 boasts much of its original paint and a fabulous working patina.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1959
  • First registered in August 1959
  • Purchased from the original owner in 2017
  • Currently indicates 83,715 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • MOT exempt
  • Around 7 years ago the pump and injectors were refurbished
  • The car has reportedly been little used over the past seven years
  • We’re sadly unaware of any paperwork save for the V5c

The Interior

  • Utilitarian interior typical of a Land Rover of this period
  • Patina throughout signifies the car’s venerable years and working life
  • Highly original with two outer seat bases installed recently
  • The seats elsewhere are showing signs of wear, commensurate with age
  • As one would expect, there is pitting and corrosion here and there
  • The instruments are all reportedly in good working order
  • Floor pans look solid with no perforation
  • The vendor notes that the car has had a patch installed in the nearside footwell
  • Original Smiths heater is still in situ
  • Doors present well though we note that the seals have perished
  • Rear bed is solid and well-presented with a spare wheel in situ

The Exterior

  • Ever-iconic aesthetics, styled by David Bache
  • Quintessential green paintwork
  • The car carries a working patina with the odd blister, bubble and scratch
  • However it does appear remarkably solid with no significant issues or perforating corrosion
  • Dents to the front wings further signify the car’s working life
  • Glasswork and lenses look in good order
  • The rear tarp roof is showing some signs of age
  • The car is sat on what appear to be original wheels
  • These are shod in tyres that are still carrying plenty of tread
  • Underneath, there are some signs of corrosion throughout
  • However, none of these are structural and don’t reflect poorly on the car

The Mechanics

  • 2.0L I4 Diesel engine
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Highly original throughout
  • Engine bay shows working patina
  • The engine is starting with the usual period smoke which quickly dissipates
  • Driving well with no reported mechanical faults

Summary

This is the sort of Land Rover that’s earned its stripes - beautifully presented as a working vehicle with every ‘battle scar’ that comes with. While it’s no Concours vehicle, that’s all part of its charm. A bit of preservation is all the car needs to be the perfect classic.
