- 3.8 XK engine
- Great original example
- Bare metal respray and rebuilt gearbox
The Appeal
Very nice example of Jaguar’s large luxury saloon car from the late fifties, with the powerful and tractable 3.8 Litre XK engine, automatic transmission and plenty of wood and leather in the spacious cabin.
Only made for a few years between 1958 and 1961 the Jaguar Mk IX was a serious performance saloon built to whisk 4 or 5 occupants with luggage across continents in complete comfort, luxury and of course great style.
Nicely restored by the current long-term owner these past nine years, the car presents extremely well and has been regularly used for going to classic car meetings and shows, where it always attracts plenty of attention.

The car was purchased in 2014 as a nice tidy car that was a bit scruffy but was solid underneath, ran well but needed the brakes doing badly.
Nine years later the car presents itself very nicely, having had the chassis and body taken back to metal and being shot-blasted and fully repaired with new wings and panels as needed.
All surfaces were then fully treated for rust prevention before the body was re-sprayed in its very subtle two-tone coachwork.
Driven and enjoyed regularly this lovely classic Jaguar is now up for auction only due to the vendor moving abroad.
The Interior
- Wonderfully aged and original interior
- Deep and comfortable leather bench seats with centre armrests
- Sunroof
- Wooden dashboard
- Correct original adjustable steering wheel
- Twin glove boxes
- Excellent door cards with tool compartments
- Carpets beginning to fray in a few places
- Boot lining kit fitted
- New headlining
- Wooden picnic tables in the rear
- Push button start
- Excellent condition throughout
The deep bench seats in the front and the rear are like comfortable sofas and the leather has an appropriate patina of age and use and it is complete with no marks or rips anywhere.
Up above, the headlining and sun visors look clan and tidy and there’s also a rarely found sliding sunroof. The top of the wooden dashboard has some cracking but otherwise the wood fascia looks pretty good. The period 4-spoke large steering wheel and array of switches and gauges constantly remind you that you’re in a luxury car with that luxury extending to the rear passengers with the pull-down wooden picnic tables and cabinet, which is currently missing the clock which has recently been fixed and is ready to reinstall.
The original His Master’s Voice valve radio is still there and still works, though it will need to have a new aerial fitted to do so.
It’s all in lovely condition and all electrics and switchgear are reported to be in working order.
The Exterior
- Excellent condition two-tone paintwork with Cornish Grey over mist
- Rear spats
- External chrome trim all very good with minimal pitting in a few places
- All new window seals fitted
- Twin fuel fillers
- Steel wheels all powder coated with new hub caps and new period tyres
- Lights and windows all clear and free from any damage
- Fully under-sealed with warranty
Treated to a full body restoration and bare-metal respray the bodywork is in great condition with only a few areas of paint having small bubbles which is most likely a paint reaction to the rust-proofing treatment rather than anything sinister.
There’s no sign of any corrosion anywhere and, other than a few imperfections in places and some chipped edges to the sunroof, the external presentation and finish of the car is very good though there is a small piece of chrome trim that needs re-affixing at the nearside front.
The Mechanics
- 3.8 Litre XK 6-cylider engine
- 3 speed automatic gearbox
- Gearbox fully rebuilt
- Twin SU carbs
- Power steering
- Disc brakes all round fully refurbished
- Stainless steel exhaust
- Electronic ignition
- Serviced in March 2023 with new plugs, oil and filter
- Carbs rebuilt and balanced
The car is reported to be in excellent mechanical health, starting easily and driving well with no issues to report, except for a non-working rev counter and the aforementioned clock that needs repairing and re-fitting
A useful tip from the vendor is to start and run the car at least every 4-5 weeks to maintain oil pressure in the torque converter, otherwise the design of the system empties the oil from the gearbox onto the garage floor.
The Summary
A great example of a rarely seen classic Mk IX Jaguar that has huge presence, offers a very comfortable and sporting drive, and is presented in great all-round and very drivable condition.
