Pre-bids

1959 Heinkel Kabine 153 S

Strong points

  • Well-preserved copy
  • Stored dry as a museum display model, indoors
  • Late example with three wheels

The most

The prolific German aircraft manufacturer Heinkel was banned from making aircraft after the Second World War, leading the firm to diversify into microcars - an affordable means of transport for economically struggling post-war Europe.

The Kabine was its first model, introducing a design that would become very famous in Britain in the following years, produced under licence by Trojan. We are delighted to offer this rare 1959 German example - one of the last produced by the brand. After October 1956, Heinkel introduced the 204cc 153 and 154 models, with three and four wheels respectively. This is a 153 S model, with a single rear wheel and a 198cc engine (reduced slightly in later years for tax reasons).

Presented in very good overall condition, this Heinkel requires repair to the electrical system, but is otherwise in good mechanical condition. These are simple machines, so it shouldn't take much to get it back on the road.

History and documentation

  • Chassis no. 353220
  • Currently on static display
  • Swedish registration documentation present
  • Copies of original workshop manuals and other documents

Condition

  • Elegantly presented in a classic white on red colour scheme
  • The large plexiglass windows all appear to be in good condition, with no cracks or noticeable signs of wear
  • Mounted on lightly soiled whitewall tyres
  • Paintwork and chrome trim appear to be in good condition
  • The interior appears well preserved, with minimal wear for a vehicle of this age and nature

Mechanicals

  • 198cc single-cylinder engine producing 9bhp
  • Three-wheel design, with power transmitted to the rear wheel
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with reverse gear
  • We have been told that there is a problem with a short circuit in the wiring.
  • As these are very simple cars, both mechanically and electrically, we are confident that it will take relatively little work to get it up and running again.

We also check whether vehicles are registered as written off as part of a total loss at the time the advert is placed on Car & Classic and provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) to help you. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the status of the vehicle and it is always worth carrying out a full vehicle history check before making an offer on it.
