The Appeal
The brainchild of prolific motorcycle designer Edward Turner, the Ariel Square Four or ‘Squariel’ is amongst the most innovative and unusual motorcycles ever created. With its four pistons arranged in a ‘square’ configuration, the Square Four was very much ahead of the curve in terms of refinement and torque, making this bike the perfect choice for long-distance riding. With a redesigned cylinder head and separate barrels, the 997 cc MkII was released in 1953, refining the new engine technology and this iteration of the Square Four would last the remainder of production.
This 1959 example is one of the last produced and remains very original. Having undergone a restoration many years ago, its paint and chromework have since mellowed in nicely while remaining in excellent overall condition. Restored and owned by a friend of the vendor for many years, this Ariel is a testament to their skill and careful treatment of the bike. We understand it to be in good mechanical order and complete with its V5C, it awaits its next custodian.
