Highlights
- The 4.9-litre straight-six runs
- The interior presents really well considering its age, especially the woodwork
- Great project potential
- Desirable Series I example
The Appeal
Designed by J.P. Blatchley, the Silver Cloud represented a major step forwards for Rolls-Royce, being their first car to step away from the basic underpinnings of their pre-war models. Renowned for their sweeping lines and luxurious appointments, these stately motorcars have long been revered by enthusiasts and there’s a real sense of occasion to any trip undertaken in one.
This 1958 example was formerly used as a wedding car, so it’s been the star of the show on numerous occasions. Now in need of some restoration work, this would make a fabulous project for anyone who’s always dreamed of owning an esteemed Rolls-Royce.
The History and Paperwork
- The vendor informs us that there is an accompanying paperwork file containing invoices for prior servicing and repair
- Formerly used as a wedding car
- Previously painted green and grey
- Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
- A running project that’s not currently in roadworthy condition
The Interior
- Beautiful full-length walnut dashboard
- Sumptuous leather upholstery in reasonably good condition
- The leather has cracked in a few places, but remains mostly intact and fairly presentable
- Besides some patination in places, the woodwork presents remarkably well throughout
- The carpeting shows its age, but is eminently usable
- All the instrumentation and switchgear appears in fine order
- The driver’s door armrest has become partially unattached
- The rear seats have survived really well and passengers have the added luxury of folding picnic tables
The Exterior
- White paintwork with a grey offside front wing
- In need of some bodywork restoration
- So far as we could tell, the chrome all looks really smart, with little in the way of wear
- There is some evidence of corrosion in the lower bodywork, especially on the offside
- Overall, it looks to be fairly straight and fundamentally solid
- The wheels present well and are complete with their hubcaps
- The trim and badging looks to be in good order
The Mechanics
- 4.9-litre straight-six
- Four-speed GM automatic gearbox
- We’re informed that the car runs, but is not currently in a state where it can be driven on the road
- All looks to be complete under the bonnet
Summary
This Rolls-Royce looks to be an excellent project and once complete, the next owner will be in the possession of a very fine premium classic.
