1958 Land Rover Series II 109 Pickup

Highlights

  • Recently subject to a comprehensive service fitting new steering and brake parts
  • Rare Series II, not to be mistaken for the far more common IIA which followed
  • New canvas tilt fitted behind the truck cab
  • 2.25-litre petrol engine
  • Chassis recently cleaned and WaxOyled

The Appeal

There’s something rather charming about seeing the unmistakable silhouette of a classic Land Rover hove into view as it makes its steady progress down a meandering country lane. This Bronze Green 1958 Series II, with its new canvas tilt, looks at home in the countryside and upon closer inspection we find it to be in really good, usable condition.
Series IIs are quite scarce and now eminently desirable as they were only made for two years. This 1958 long-wheelbase example has been recently treated to a comprehensive service in which a number of steering and brake parts were refreshed. The vendor informs us that it drives well and so is ready to be enjoyed by its next fortunate owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • We understand that there have been only six owners from new
  • We’re informed that the previous owner purchased the vehicle from a gentleman in Stirlingshire who is said to have acquired it from the daughter of the long-term owner who had been an Aberdeenshire crofter
  • It was reportedly used as the farm workhorse for a number of years
  • We’re informed that the current owner has spent around £3,000 on servicing
  • MOT and road tax exempt owing to its age
  • First registered in November 1958
  • The vendor has only covered around fifty miles since acquiring the Land Rover

The Interior

  • ‘Elephant hide’ upholstery in reasonable and eminently usable condition
  • Basic, utilitarian and functional with few of today’s luxuries
  • Fitted with the Smiths round cabin heater
  • The steel dashboard is in good condition overall with minimal wear or corrosion
  • The centrally mounted instruments appear in good shape and there are additional Dymo labels to help identify the switchgear
  • Nice level of patination to the sprung, three spoke steering wheel
  • No carpeting, door cards or headlining fitted
  • As it’s a pickup, there are no rear seats but the load space can be enclosed using the new tilt
  • Fitted with hard-wearing rubber floor mats
  • Overall, this is a very presentable and largely original interior which is great to see

The Exterior

  • Looks to have been hand painted in Bronze Green
  • Contrasting Limestone wheels and cab roof
  • Relatively straight bodywork for a working Land Rover of this vintage
  • All the factory rivets and spot welds are visible down the sides suggesting this vehicle has never been subject to any significant body repairs or any heavy skims of filler
  • The paint finish looks to have been achieved using brushes or rollers which suits a working vehicle
  • The aluminium inner wings remain unpainted which is factory correct
  • New canvas tilt fitted during the vendor’s ownership
  • The chassis has recently been cleaned and much of it has been WaxOyled
  • While there is a little surface rust in places, we couldn’t see any structural corrosion
  • The bulkhead appears in really good order with no rust in all the usual places
  • The off-road tyres appear in good condition
  • The galvanised steel elements present well for their age
  • The glass looks in really good shape as do the removable door tops

The Mechanics

  • 2.25-litre petrol engine with a Solex carburettor
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with selectable four-wheel drive and low range
  • The engine itself was once painted blue although much of the finish has now flaked away
  • Recently subject to a comprehensive service
  • Brakes and steering overhauled with a number of new parts fitted
  • The vendor informs us that the land Rover runs and drives well

Summary

Here we have a very presentable old Land Rover that has lived an interesting life. It’s great to see examples that have been used as intended and the fact that this is a rare Series II makes it just that bit more special.
